Obituary in Newspaper
Loius Nordstrom The sympathy of the people of Sprague, Manitoba, go out to the Nordstrom family on the sudden loss of their brother, uncle and friend to so many, Louis Nordstrom who passed away suddenly March 20th in the Roseau Area hospital at the age of 75.
Loved and known to everyone young and old as "Uncle Louis" he was born in Roseau County Dec. 25,1897. He moved to Sprague with his parents, Lars and Brita Nordstrom in 1907 where they lived with his mothers father and mother, Lars and Brita Nelson until homesteading on a place east of Sprague. Later Louis purchased the homestead and farmed for a number of years. Louis a life long bachelor, lived with his father Lars and brother Emanuel on this farm for many years. The farm was later sold to John and Lilian (Nordstrom) Hebel. Louis lived with his brother John and Jennie after John's passing, until the day of his passing.
His winters were spent carpentering and bush work. At one time, together with his brother Emanuel and brother in law Ruben Olson, they operated a sawmill doing custom work for area residence. Summer often found Louis helping out in the local hay fields of family and friends or off picking cranberries, blueberries and other local fruit. Summer or winter his favorite activity was fishing, often with friends, brothers and sisters and many nieces and nephews. On the morning of his passing, fishing was the planned event of the day with his friend Bob Wesner.
Louis is survived by four sisters, Mrs. Julia Limpwright and Mrs. Florence Olson both of Sprague and Mrs. Robert Norman (Lillian) of Fairbault, Minn. and Mrs. Frank Anderson (Sophie) of Owattona, Minn: two brothers: Samuel of Redditt, Ont. and Emanuel Of Sprague: one sister-in-law Mrs. John Nordstrom (Jennie).
Funeral services were held at the Sprague Baptist Church, a building he and some of his brother worked on, with Rev. Moorhead officiating and interment at the local cemetery. Lunch was served at the centennial center after the services. (Also a building at which he worked on)
Attending the funeral were 17 nieces and nephews, 21 great nieces and nephews and 31 cousins coming from places such as Fargo, ND, Lancaster and Thief River Falls, Minn. Many others from Winnipeg, Thompson, Calgary, Neepawa, Meadows, Redditt, Kenora and Atikokan, Ontario.
The funeral was so attended that doors and windows were opened so friends standing outside could hear the service. Also of note is a Citation presented to Louis in 1967, in sincere appreciation of meritorious service on behalf of the members of the credit union and the entire Credit Union movement. Louis was one of a handful of local founding members who provided seed money to start the Sprague Credit Union.
