"Captain" Isaac Lane is a fairly well researched ancestor. Much of the following is from the research of Penelope Johnson Allen, who also researched the Roberson's and several other ancestral families in eastern TN.
He was a revolutionary war soldier serving three tours of duty. He fought at the battle of King's Mountain. In 1776 at the age of 16 he enlisted in a company of Pittsylvania Co VA commanded by Capt Peter Perkins. He served about three months. In the autumn of that year he moved to the Boone's Creek settlement on the Watauga in present day TN. Some of his kinsmen were already there clearing an area for a settlement.Isaac was then a soldier under Captain William Bean (uncle of his future wife)and was active in 1777 in driving out tories and loyalists from the Watauga and Nolachucky area. In 1780 his rank was lieutenant, and he enlisted for the expedition to King's Mountain under Captain George Russell (Father of Isaac's future wife) and Captain Jarnagin. It is said that he fought in the battle of King's Mountain with his six brothers. Later he was in the battle of Boyd's creek which was fought against the Cherokee Indians. Isaac was cited for bravery in this battle as is mentioned in The Annals of Tennessee.
In 1781 Isaac received a grant of land from the State of North Carolina for 100 acres in Washington Co "on Sinking Creek of Watauga, joining the lands of William Bean SR and Cato West, including a spring". This was surveyed in Aug 1782.After marrying Sarah, he set up housekeeping in a new log cabin on his land.
His family were devout Baptists and his uncle was the Rev Tidence Lane who organized the first church in TN in 1779. Tidence Lane was NOT the father of Isaac, however, as is sometimes said.
As the pioneers pushed westward Isaac and his family followed. Isaac and his wife Sarah moved to Hawkins Co. In 1789 he sold his plantation in Washington Co to John Crabtree for 120 pounds. When the county of Hawkins was divided in 1796, Isaac's land was in the part that became Grainger Co. Isaac was active in the affairs of Grainger Co for many years. He may have earned his title of Captain by being an officer in a company in Grainger Co.
In 1797 Isaac bought 320 acres in Grainger Co from James Berry of Hawkins Co. The land was on the north fork of the Sycamore Creek, which adjoined his home at Big Spring. He lived here until about 1820 when he moved to McMinn Co which was created from Cherokee lands in the "Hiwassee purchase". In 1799 Isaac was a member of the Grainger Co court and on Feb 21 of that year was given permission "to build a grist and saw mill on the spring fork of Sycamore Creek, he owning the lands."
In 1801 Claiborne Co was cut from Grainger Co and Isaac found himself again in a new county. He was one of the justices that organized the first court of Claiborne Co and was chosen chairtman on Dec 7, 1801.They were founding members of the Big Spring Baptist Church.
When lands in present day McMinn Co opened up, the Lane family settled in the Mouse Creek Valley in an area now known as Niota. They were among the largest land owners in the area.
Isaac is buried in a family graveyard on the highway a short distance north of Niota. Another reference to his grave states that he is buried on the Burn farm which was origionally on the Lane plantation, about 5 miles south of Sweetwater near the Lee highway. His grave was found in 1999 and was in terrible shape.
His will in McMinn Co was written 1 Jan 1849. It mentions daughters Betsy Hill, Sarah Neil, Polly Hurst, Jemima Gibson and Oliver Shults.(sic). He also mentions the children of Seleta Lane in his will.
