MARGARET MAXWELL

Margaret Maxwell is the daughter of George Maxwell of Newark and his wife Marion Cunningham. The date and place of her birth is not known. According to an account of the Knoxes of Ranfurly in MacFarlane's Genealogical Colleltions: "Her mother was a daughter of the House of Craigends Cunninghame." Walter MacFarlane's Genealogical Collections, ii, p 279

Death

Margaret Maxwell died in January 1622. The place of her death is not certainly known but she probably died at Selvieland, the home of her second husband, which was located in Kilbarchan parish, Renfrewshire, Scotland. Her testament dative and inventory was given up by her second husband William Knox of Selvieland, in name and behalf of their daughter Jean Knox. Confirmation was granted on 16 November 1622. First Marriage

The Death of her First Husband

Uchtred Knox of Ranfurly predeceased his father and died in December 1589. His testament dative and inventory was given up by Margaret Maxwell "lady Ramphorlie the younger" in name and behalf of her children, Susana Knox, George Knox, Margaret Knox, Alexander Knox, and Jane Knox, who were confirmed as executors dative to their deceased father on 5 December 1590. Her eldest son, John Knox of Ranfurly, was already provided for and, consequently, he is not mentioned in his father's testament. Concerning her Marriages

"An exact and well vouched genealogie of the ancient family of Knoc or Knox of Ranfurlie in the Kingdom of Scotland .......... Uchter Knox the next in succession of the House of Ranfurlie was married to Margaret Maxwell daughter of George Maxwell of New Wark then a great and flourishing family in Renfrew - Shyre. Her mother was a daughter of the House of Craigends Cunninghame, by her he had issue a son his heir Uchter. This lady being a widow married a second time a near relation of her husband William Knox of Silvieland the direct and immediate ancestor of the Knoxes of Dungannon who are his heirs male both of the Knoxes of Ranfurlie and Silvieland and wears at least has right to wear by blood and descent the principal armorial bearing of the family."
