When Mary Molly Lowther was born in 1740 in Albemarle, Virginia, her father, Robert, was 26 and her mother, Aquilla, was 24. She married Alexander Morrison in 1759. They had five children during their marriage. She died as a young mother in 1774 in West Virginia, at the age of 34.

Her birthplace, Shadwell, by the Rivanna River in Albemarle County, Virginia near Charlottesville, was the birthplace of Thomas Jefferson. It was so named after Shadwell parish in London by his father,
