He was a Private in the Revolutionary War. Possibly born in Loudon County, Virginia, his father was born in County Westmeath, Ireland.

There is a great deal of confusion in Family Tree records for Joel Lowther on Ancestry.com. His birth is given variously as 1741, 1746, 1756 and 1760 in 3 different counties in Virginia: Loudoun, Augusta and Albemarle. His death is given as 1853 in Athens Ohio or in Rutland, Ohio. I think the latter is correct, as he is recorded in The Abstract of Graves of Revolutionary Patriots (Ancestry.com) as being buried in Rutland Cemetary, Rutland, Meigs Co., Ohio. He did however live near Athens, Ohio circa 1800-1840, since he married Nancy Douglas there in 1812 and his daughter (Alice) Delilah, born 1802 in Athens Co., OH, married Hugh Daugherty in Athens on 13 Dec 1821.
