Biography
Biography by Jouett (Taylor) Prisley:
https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Thompson-640
She was said to be a worthy woman who was lavished with praise and attention, and described as “brilliant, vivacious, graceful, a famous beauty, proud and queenly, firm and dignified in character, with charming manners.
Family tales told by Helen Marie Taylor include the story of Martha fending off an Indian attack from the kitchen of their Bloomsbury house, where she was directing dinner preparations when three Indians darted inside, voices raised in war whoops and tomahawks flailing. The alert and quick-thinking Martha dipped a pot into the large simmering kettle of mush bubbling on the open hearth and dashed the scalding contents over their naked bodies. They panicked and instead of escaping into the woods, fled into the house and rolled under a bed where she held them at bay until her husband and sons rushed into the house. [3]
A different version relates that Martha is inside the house, in the dining room, looking out toward the kitchen, when she sees the threatening attitude of the approaching Indians. Noting how thin and hungry they look, she seeks to appease them by calling for a servant to bring food. Rather than slinging hot porridge at them, she has them served at her dining table knowing that someone from the kitchen would already be running to the fields for Master James.
After her husband James' death, Martha was left with four adult children over 20, and five younger ones aged four to 17. She was fortunate not to be bereft financially, and she lived in the bosom of a close, fond and supportive family for another 33 years, dying at age 83.
Some few years after James’ death, the Virginia House of Burgesses ordered the counties of Hanover, Caroline, Orange and Spotsylvania to pay 15,000 pounds of tobacco to Martha, in recognition of James's surveying services in running the boundaries of those counties.
Her will, recorded at Orange County, 17 April 1750, twelve years before her death, named her sons, Zachary, George and Erasmus as executors, requesting no appraisal of property, and asking that distribution be done according to James’ will - which has not been found.
One Taylor family Bible shows Martha's date of death as 19 Nov 1762. [4]
