DNA evidence suggests that Jacob Stover, Jr. was the father of Mary's children (him being at least the most likely candidate).

• It is unclear why Mary's children bore the Adkins name.

Children of Mary and Jacob:

  1. David Adkins (Abt 1754 - Abt 1832)

Individual Record

Mary is the head of a large family in Southwestern Virginia. They are known as the "Royal Line". Records on Mary are few and far between. There is no documentation for the name of her husband or when she married. Long held oral family tradition says she was the common law wife of the Earl of Oxford. This has led to much speculation and more than one fervently believed story handed down among Mary's descendants. We do know she had six children and all of them used the surname Adkins. Although no proof or documentation was provided the first written account for Mary and her descendants was published in 1955 in a booklet compiled by Golza B. Adkins for the Adkins family reunion. One section is titled, "The Royal Branch of Adkinses" from "Information Received from May Adkins Tabor." It says: "Jacob Oxford was the son of an English Earl who came to America as an English tax collector. He met and by common-law marriage lived with Mary Adkins who was of Scotch descent and of the same ancestral line of people as Mary, Queen of Scots...." The account goes on to give details of Marys life and her children. This story has circulated in the Adkins family for years but thus far no proof of its accuracy has been found.

[Note: Virginia has never recognized common-law marriage. - Maven]

Note: Mary ADKINS was born in 1735 in Goochland County, Virginia. She died between 1814 and 1820 in Cabell County, Virginia. Mary Adkins is the mother of almost all Adkins descendants of Southwestern West Virginia. With most family researchers her descendants make up the so-called "Royal Line." This Royal Line theory comes from the family oral tradition that Mary was the common law wife of a descendant of the Earl of Oxford. According to the tradition, he deserted Mary and her children during the Revolutionary War and returned to England. Because the family name of the person that held the title 'Earl of Oxford' during the mid 1700's was Harley it was assumed by almost all researchers that this man's name was Jacob Harley. Mary Adkins is buried in an unmarked grave on Beech Fork at the mouth of Bowen's Creek." Mary married (common law) Jacob Harley, son of (unknown) in Virgin1a, (Jacob Harley was born about 1730 in England.) The children were David Adkins (Patriot) b. 1754, Mark Adkins, John Adkins, Christina Adkins, Jacob Adkins, Sherrod Adkins Sr, Nancy Adkins.

Death about 1820 (Age 84 years) Beech Fork, Wayne, West Virginia, USA
