William Adkins

(WILLIAM V., JOHN THOMAS, JOHN THOMAS, THOMAS, HENRY) was born Abt. 1721 in Meachum Creek, Goochland, VA, and died March 15, 1784 in Pittsylvania County, Virginia. He married LYDIA OWENS Abt. 1745 in Goochland County, Virginia, daughter of WILLIAM OWENS and LYDIA LUNSFORD. She was born Abt. 1724 in Henrico County, Virginia, and died 1782 in Pittyslvania County, Virginia.

Notes for WILLIAM ADKINS:William and Elizabeth Parker Adkins and family moved westward in 1740 to what is now Franklin County, Virginia. (This area was part of Brunswick County in 1740 then Lunengery County in 1746, then Halifax County in 1752, then Pittsylvania County in 1767, to Hendry County in 1776 and now, finally, Franklin County since 1785.)

This move westward was part of the white man's first penetration across the Blue Ridge Mountains. They lived in the Snow Creek District on the Harping and Story Creeks on the Pigg River. William became a land owner/farmer then changed occupations by becoming a mill operator. (Mill operating became a family profession.) The deaths of William and Elizabeth Parker Adkins aren't clear, Elizabeth disappears after 1740 and William disappears after 1753 in Franklin County, Virginia. Take Rt 969 out of Callands to Rt 626 to Cooper's old store, turn left on to Rt 649. Cemetery is at the back of the farm owned by Oscar Burger as of 1984.

There is now enough evidence (via Y-DNA matches) and from existing records to say with confidence that Booker Mullins, his sons (including David and Sherwood) and his male descendants (including Andrew Jackson Mullins—known as Brandy Jack) have a paternal genetic ancestry that has its origins with that of descendants of William Adkins (who married Elisabeth Parker).

Research has not pinpointed exactly which of William Adkins’ sons or grandsons fathered Booker Mullins, but one of the most likely candidates was a son named Sherwood Adkins. While we do not have intangible proof of that, we DO have proof that links Booker Mullins and his descendants to the Adkins who descend from William Adkins. The Y-DNA of ALL of the Booker Mullins males tested to date match with the Y-DNA of male descendants of this William Adkins.
