About Mary Aikman

In 1810, Mary (or Polly) Barr Aikman and her husband John Aikman, along with Mary's brothers Hugh, James and Robert Barr, and other friends and neighbors from Bourbon County, Kentucky filed deeds in what later became Knox County (and later Daviess County, Indiana) near where the town of Washington stands today.

Along with a number of other friends and neighbors from Bourbon County, several of the family had moved to Indiana by 1810. However, as the War of 1812 began, British had infiltrated the area and provided firearms to the Indians and stirred them up to combat the settlers, and bloody Indian attacks and killings of settlers by the Indians became frequent, and some of the family returned to Kentucky for a time.

(Note: Shortly after the birth of their first child, Robert Barr returned to Kentucky with his wife Hannah riding all of the way on horseback with their baby in her arms, not to return until 1816 after the uprisings had settled down. Conversely, John and Mary Polly Aikman evidently stayed throughout the troubles, and lived in one of ten forts built throughout the area where their neighbors gathered when Indian uprisings occurred.)

Date and place of burial have also been erroneously reported to be October 29, 1845 at Old City Cemetery, Washington, Daviess County, Indiana, United States <presumably attested on her cited FamilySearch Record, conflicts with her Find A Grave memorial>.
