Biography
Mary Augusta (Dutton) Alloway was born on June 6, 1854 in Will County, Illinois, United States. Her parents were Charles Adley Dutton and Laura Ann (Sutton) Dutton.
Mary married Benton Dudley Alloway on October 1, 1872 in Grant, Taylor Co, Iowa. Together they had the following children: Lewis Addley Alloway; Mainard Edward Alloway; Charles L. Alloway; Augusta Anna Alloway; Dudley Benton Alloway; William Ernest "Will" Alloway; John Elmer Alloway; Walter Jabez Alloway; Elizabeth Sophrona "Bertha" (Alloway) Long; Ira Milton Alloway; Elsie Eveline Alloway; David E. Alloway; Roy Marion Alloway.
She died on January 6, 1908 in Bonesteel, Gregory County, South Dakota, United States and was buried in Pleasant Valley Cemetery.
Some sources say she was born 8 November 1854. The 1900 census called her Mary S. Alloway. She knew she was dying of cancer, but she wanted to live to attend the wedding of her son Walter to Ethel Thomas. Ethel was teaching at the Schindlebower School and planned to finish the spring term before getting married. However, at Christmas break she learned of Mary Alloway's desire. Ethel resigned her teaching position and the young couple was married in the Alloway home. Mary Alloway was able to put on her black silk dress and sit up for the ceremony, but died six days later.
