Portrait of Mary Plumb Baldwin (Fairchild). She was one of four women in Oberlin College, 1837-1841, the first women in the U.S. to graduate from any college.
Her brother, James H. Fairchild, was President of Oberlin College, 1833-1858. She married Cyrus H. Baldwin, (born July 24, 1817) on September 14, 1844. Her son, James Fairchild Baldwin, married Fidelia Finch; founded and built Grand Hospital in Columbus, Ohio in 1900, the largest privately owned hospital in the United States; hospital given to Columbus and is now a large medical center. Four children of James F. Baldwin and Fidelia Finch Baldwin: Austin Guy Baldwin, married Armine Prentiss: sons Austin and James. Fredrika Hull Baldwin married Frederic Roland Hoover, 1900: daughter Alice Elizabeth Hoover born 12/23/1901, married Edward Graham Baird 8/10/1929, died 3/7/94. Children of Alice Hoover Baird: daughter Jean Elizabeth Baird, (2/12/33), married William Robert Haney 12/22/54, Married George Appel Wiltsee 11/30/85. Son Joseph Edward Baird (3/18/34) married Anne Breukelman (1959) -- 2nd Vice President at Chase Manhattan, President of Occidental Petroleum.

Baldwin and Fidelia Finch were: Austin Guy Baldwin (see above); Fredrika Hull Baldwin (see above); Hugh Baldwin, married Maria Elizabeth (Czekus) Moor, no children; Helen Fairchild Baldwin, married Ralph May: widowed, married Edward J. Pease. Son James Baldwin May born 8/21/11. Fidelia Finch died, and Dr. James Baldwin remarried Ida Strickler. Their children were: Alice Baldwin, married Harry Hall (daughter Ruth McCuaig, attended Oberlin); Josephine Baldwin, married Harry Yoxall."
Her brother, George Thompson Fairchild, was the third President of Kansas State Agricultural College in Manhattan, Kansas (now Kansas State University). Brother, James Fairchild, was President of Oberlin College and brother, Edward Henry Fairchild, was President of Berea College.
Her son, Cyrus Grandison Baldwin, was the first official President of Pomona College.
His great-uncle, John Baldwin, was the founder of Baldwin Wallace College in Berea, Ohio and Baker University in Baldwin City, Kansas.
