biography

Mary was the daughter of Col. John Flood and his first wife, Margaret (the widow of William Finche). Col. Flood had come to Virginia in 1610 as a young boy, about age 10. His property, known as "Sunken Marsh", was located on the south side of the James River in Surry County, VA. Col. Flood married for a second time to Fortune Jordan

John Washington's land was west of "Sunken Marsh" where Clermont, Surry County, VA, is located today and ran south of there.

Mary Flood was born about 1635 and sent to England to be educated. She returned to Virginia where she married Richard Blunt of Isle of Wight County, VA and had a son, Thomas, who was born about 1656.

After Richard Blunt's death, Mary soon married Charles Ford in 1657 - but he died shortly after they married.

John Washington was Mary Flood's third husband. It's possible that John had met her when she was in school in England. John and Mary had a contract of marriage stating that he would see that her son, Thomas Blunt, would receive his rightful inheritance from his father (Richard Blunt).

John Washington and Mary Flood Blunt Ford Washington had one son, Richard, who was born about 1660.

John died about the same time - perhaps drowned at sea.

Mary married for a fourth time to Henry Briggs and had several children, including a daughter Marie.
