MARY SMITH, b. October 09, 1629, Hadley, Suffolk, England; d. December 16, 1668, Hadley, Hampshire, MA. http://home.earthlink.net/~herblst/smithgen.htm
---------------------------------------------
Mary, daughter of Rev. Henry Smith and his wife Dorothy (_______) Smith was born about 1624-5. She married about 1642 Samuel Hale of Wethersfield.[1]
"Mary is placed as a daughter of Rev. Henry Smith because Samuel Hale and Rebecca Bowman in 1680 made a deposition pertaining to the lands originally granted to Rev. Henry Smith; Hale had acquired Smith's home lot; and Francis Hall (second husband of Dorothy2 Smith) in a letter mentions my sister Bowman and my brother Hale. Mary named daughters Rebecca and Dorothy for her sisters and mother. On 28 March 1664, Rebecca wife of Lieut. Samuel Smith of New London, sold land in the absence of her husband and the deed was witnessed I Gershom Bulkeley [the New London minister], Obadiah Bruen [the local magistrate] and Samuel Hale. [New London town records 1647 to 66 pp. 105-6]."[2]
Born say 1624. m. before 1643 Samuel Hale. Samuel remarried and outlived his second wife also and died 9 Nov 1693.[2]
Said by some to be the daughter of the Rev. Henry Smith, b. 1588 near Norwich, England. This Henry Smith did some land transactions with the Hale family, but Mary is not included in the list of the eight children of Henry Smith listed in the History of Wethersfield, Vol. II. , p. 628-629. The source lists other accounts of Henry Smith's origins. According to New England Families, Vol. IV, Rev. Smith was married to Dorthey, sister of the Rev. John Cotton. This also gives eight children, but does not name two of the daughters.
Savage has long discussion of two Henry Smith's but is unsure what to conclude.
The daughter of Rev. Henry Smith (1599-1648), she married Samuel Hale in 1642 or 1643 in Wethersfield, Conn. Her birth and death dates have never been verified, but it is assumed that Mary died between 1668 when their daughter Dorothy was born and 1675 as Samuel married Phebe Dickinson after 1675. It is Phebe who was listed as widow Hale died on 19 Jan 1711/12 in the Barbour Records. That is also confirmed on page 7 of Hale, House and related families, by Donald Lines Jacobus. Samuel's marriage to Phebe can be confirmed on page 637 of NE Marriages, Prior to 1700.
Mary's death was not recorded in the Wethersfield records, where she lived. Samuel remarried after her death. He died 9 Nov 1693. Note - 20 Jul 1680 from a merged profile has no known source, although Samuel Hale's wife's husband, John Rose, died before June 1683.
