Biography
The exact date of birth of 6 (or 26) Sep 1684 for Mary Keeling as found in various places online cannot be correct if the children were bornbeginning in 1690. This date of birth is said to have been preserved by descendants. Her surname is unproved, but generally accepted as shown here. She is thought to have been the daughter of Capt. George Keeling and Ursula Fleming.
<u>However</u>, more reliable sources (see below) show Mary's oldest son John born 25 Jul 1704, which easily correlates with a 1684 date of birth for Mary, and a 1679 date of birth for Mary's husband John. If this Mary was born in 1664, it is possible, but doubtful, that she would have had her eighth child in 1717/18 at the age of 53. There are similar issues with this Mary's place of birth as Hanover County, Virginia, which was not formed from St. Paul's Parish of New Kent County until 1719. <ref>Wikipedia: Hanover County, Virginia</ref> If this Mary came from that part of Virginia, as most genealogists presume, it would have to have been from either New Kent County (est. 1654) or York County (one of the eight original shires of the Virginia colony). The date and place of death for the Mary who married John Williams (1679-1741) is unknown. Some genealogists have Mary's husband John dyingin North Carolina, where some of Mary and John's children moved, but there is no proof that this John and/or this Mary ever left Virginia.
