About Melissa Jane Osborn Camomile

There is another photo under the Media Tab above which shows Melissa and her daughter, Ada Melissa Camomile. It was probably taken about 1907 or 1908. The above photo appears to have been taken when she was younger. Melissa Jane Osborn was born July 5, 1872, in Minersville, Beaver County, Utah, to parents John Wesley Osborn and Mary Amelia Rollins Osborn. In the 1880 U.S. Federal Census for Minersville, Melissa was 7 years old and living with her parents and siblings, who were listed in the census as follows: John, 47, Mary Amelia (listed as Marie A.), 36, Wesley, 19, Liolde A. 17, Minerva, 16, Harriet, 14, Henry, 12, William, 10, Melissa, 7, and Frank, 5. Her father, John, was working as a miner. The census shows the name Osborn spelled with an "e", but not all of John and Mary Amelia's public records show an "e" at the end of their name. Melissa married Frederick William Camomile on July 25, 1892, at the age of 20 years old. Frederick was born April 27, 1872, in Salt Lake City, Utah.

In the 1910 census, Melissa and Fred were both 37 years old, living at 3 McDonald Court in Salt Lake City with their children, Fredrick Daniel, 17, Morris Wesley, 14, Nellie Afton, 12, Eva Lenore 9, Eugene Osborne, 6, and Ada Melissa, 3 years old. Melissa and Fred had been married for 17 years and had 6 children, all of whom were still living. Fred and Melissa were both born in Utah, and Fred's parents were both born in England. All of Fred and Melissa's children were born in Utah. Fred was working as a boiler maker, and they were renting their home in Salt Lake City. Living nearby was Fred's 73 year old widowed mother, Emma, and his brother, Charles H., 42. Emma had 10 children, 6 of whom were still living at the time. Emma immigrated from England to America in 1857 and had been naturalized. Fred's brother, Charles, was working as a laborer.

Just ten years later, in the 1920 census, Melissa, 47, divorced from Fred, was living at 550 21st South in Salt Lake in a rented home with her children Eugene, 15, Ada, 12, Rollins, 7, Mary who was almost 3 years old, her son-in-law Milo Hill, 29, and daughter, Nellie Afton Hill, 23. Nellie Afton and Milo were married in 1917 in Salt Lake City, Utah. Milo was working as a laborer for the power company.

Frederick W. Camomile, 49, was listed in the 1920 Census living in Seattle, King County, Washington, working as a boilermaker in a shipyard, and was married to Elise Catherine, 36. They were living at 6027 44th Street with Elise's daughters, Stella W. Mitchell, 15, Sara C. Hazel, 10, and Lila B. Hazel, 8. Elise had previously been married to George F. Hazel, and in the 1910 census, they were living in Salt Lake City. At that time, George was 35, Elise C. was 27 and their daughters, Stella W., 6, and Sarah C., 1 year old.

In the 1930 U.S. Federal Census for Camarillo, Ventura County, California, Fred, 59 and his wife, Elise C., 47, were living alone at a home they owned valued at $3,000. which was located on West Loop Drive or Loma Drive. Elise was born in Germany as were her parents. Fred was working as a laborer on a berry farm. I wonder why he is no longer working as a boiler maker....perhaps there was no work in that field in 1930, which was during the Great Depression.

By 1930, Melissa and some of her children had also moved to California and were living in Bloomington, San Bernardino County. Melissa, 57, her son Eugene Osborn Camomile, 26, and daughter Mary Amelia, 13, were living in a rented home on Vine Street with a boarder, Rollo D. Arnold, 25. Eugene was working as an orange packer and Rollo as a receiver in an orange packing company.

In the 1940 census, Melissa, 67, was living with her sister Hattie Baker (probably Harriet), a 73-year old widow, and her son, Melvin Kennedy, 52, in a home located on Pearl Street in Hueneme, Ventura County, California, which Hattie owned and was valued at $2,500. Melvin was working as a bookkeeper. Melissa passed away 19 years later on July 29, 1959, while living in Ventura County, California.

Fred and Melissa's oldest son, Frederick Daniel Camomile, born March 10, 1893, in Salt Lake City, was 26 years old in the 1920 census living at 453 Fourth Street in Bremerton, Kitsap County, Washington, with L.P. McAber family as boarders. He was working as a welder in the electric industry.

Find A Grave.com shows Frederick W. Camomile died on February 7, 1934, and his wife Elise passed away in 1967. They were both buried in the Mountain View Cemetery and Mausoleum in Altadena, Los Angeles, California.

When Melissa and Fred's son Morris Wesley Camomile completed his U.S. World War I Draft Registration Card on June 5, 1916, he was 21 years old, single, and described himself as being tall with a medium build, with gray eyes and light brown hair. He was living at 284 Garfield Avenue in Salt Lake City, Utah, and working as a boiler maker. He was born August 27, 1895, in Salt Lake City.

Morris served in World War I, and enlisted in the Regular Army at Ft. McDowell, California, in August of 1917, and served as a Private 1st Class from December 1, 1917, to June 25, 1918. He also served overseas from 1918 until his discharge, and was in the Medical Detachment at the Presidio of Monterrey, California, in July of 1918. He was at the camp hospital until his discharge on May 26, 1919, with an immediate re-enlistment abroad.

In the 1920 census, Morris Camomile, 24, was living at Camp Pike, Pulaski, Arkansas, still serving as a private in the Army. By 1930, Morris was living in Hawthorne, Los Angeles County, California, and had married Bertha Davies. Morris, 34, and Bertha, 31, had three children, Bertha P., 8, David W., 7, and Helen L., 5. They were living at 746 Gale Street in Inglewood Township, which was part of the city of Hawthorne at the time. They were renting their home for $20 a month, and had a radio in their home. Morris and Bertha had been married for 10 years, and he was still working as a boiler maker in a refinery.

By 1940, Morris and Bertha had moved to Brighton in Sacramento County, California, and were living at 1454 Route 2, in a home they own valued at $500, and were listed as: Morris, 44, Bertha, 41, Phyllis, 19, David, 17, and Helen, 15. Morris was working as a temporary laborer for the Department of Highways, and for the 29 weeks he worked at 32 hours per week his income was $800. Bertha was working as a typist for the division of architecture. Morris had a 7th grade education. In 1942 when Morris completed his World War II Draft Registration Card, he was 46 years old, living at Colonial Acres in Sacramento, California, and was working at the Federal Building in Sacramento. Their mailing address was Rt. 2, Box 12454, Sacramento, California.

U.S. City Directory listings from about 1941 to 1949 for Morris and Bertha show they were living Route 2, Box 1454, and Bertha was working as a clerk for the State Department of Finance, and later as a machine operator, and Morris was working as a laborer. A 1949 listing showed they were living at 4200 Carly Avenue, and Bertha was still working as a clerk at the State Department of Finance, but Morris was not included in that listing.

From about 1955 to 1958, Morris and Bertha were living at 4200 67th Street, and Morris wasworking as a janitor at the post office, and Bertha was still working as a clerk at the State Department of Finance. In 1959, Morris was working as a mechanic for the U.S. General Services Administration, and their son David was living nearby at 4740 62nd Street. Morris W. Camomile passed away May 17, 1964, while living in Sacramento, California. Bertha Davies Camomile passed away on March 29, 1986, also in Sacramento, California.

In the 1940 census for Santa Ana, Orange County, California, Melissa and Fred's son, Eugene, 36, was living with his wife, Grace E. Forgy, 37, and her parents Oly K. Forgy, 67, and Lillian N., 62, and her 95-year old widowed mother, Mary Fehr, at 204 South Sycamore. Previously in 1935, Eugene had been living in Corona, Riverside County, California. Eugene was working as a handy man in the orange industry, and his wife, Grace, was a packer in the orange business. For the 40 weeks Eugene worked at 50 hours per week in 1939 he earned income of $905, and Grace who worked 29 weeks at 9 hours per week earned $500.

City Directory listings in 1947 and 1949 for Eugene O. and Grace E. Camomile show they were employed as packing house workers living at 1915 Orange Street in Santa Ana, California. I don't know where Eugene and Grace were living after 1950, as there are no additional public records for them. Eugene Osborne Camomile passed away on April 23, 1985, in Orange County, California. Grace, who was born June 4, 1900, passed away on June 16, 1992, also in the City of Orange, in Orange County, California. At one time she was living at 627 W. Culver Avenue, but I don't know the date of her residence there.

Melissa and Fred's son, Jules Rollin Camomile married Elizabeth "Betty" M. Anderson on January 22, 1959, in Clark County, Nevada. A U.S. City Directory listing for Jules R. and Betty Camomile show they were working as the managers Fireside Lodge, and living at 2103 De La Vina Street in Santa Barbara, California. They divorced in September of 1971 in Los Angeles, California. A U.S. Public Records Index listing shows that Jules R. Camomile was living at 2620 Kansas Avenue, Apt. C., in Santa Monica, California, but I don't know what year he lived there. Jules passed away April 12, 1989, in Glendale, Los Angeles County, California. He was born December 30, 1912, in Utah.

Melissa and Fred's daughter, Mary Amelia Camomile married Neil E. Conway, and in the 1940 census they were living in Camarillo, Ventura County, California, on Los Angeles Avenue (Route 9), in a home they were renting for $10 per month. Listed there were: Neil, 34, Mary, 23, and their daughters, Mary Jean, 6, and Louise J., 9 months old. Neil was working as a farm laborer, and for the 52 weeks he worked at 54 hours per week he earned income of $1,080, which was about 39 cents per hour.

Mary Amelia Camomile Conway, born January 1, 1917, in Salt Lake City, Utah, passed away on November 11, 2006, at the Ojai Hospital in Ojai, Ventura County, California, and was buried in the Tulare Cemetery in Tulare, Tulare County, California. Her husband Neil E. Conway, born in 1905, passed away in 1982, and was buried with his wife in Tulare. An obituary for Mary in the Tulare Advance Register read as follows:

Mary Conway, 1917-2006: Mary Amelia Conway, 89, passed away Saturday, Nov. 11, 2006, at an Ojai hospital. Mary was born January 1, 1917, in Salt Lake City, Utah, to Melissa Jane and Fred Camomile. At the age of 7, Mary and her mother came to California and settled in Port Hueneme. She attended Hueneme Elementary School and Oxnard High School. She later met and married Neil Conway and they spent the next 50 years together. They moved to Tulare in 1970. She moved to Ojai in 1989. Mary worked at numerous jobs, including 20 years as a psychiatric technician at Camarillo State Hospital. She was preceded in death by her husband, Neil Conway in 1982.

Survivors include her daughters, Jeanie Leonardo (husband, Ralph) of Oxnard, Louise Sanford of Ojai and Kathleen Hughan of La Pine, Oregon; grandchildren, Christine Hester, Mary Soto, Cathy Cuilty, Craig Sanford, Matt Sanford, Neil Hughan, Jane Olsen, Sandra Trenkmann and Greg Hughan; 18 great-grandchildren; and 12 great-great-grandchildren. A private memorial service was held in Camarillo. Arrangements were by Coast Cities Cremations in Ventura. Originally published November 21, 2006.

Melissa and Fred's daughter, Nellie Afton, married Milo W. Hill in 1917 in Salt Lake City, was living with her husband Milo at 37 Sixth West Street, Salt Lake City, during the 1930 census. Living with Milo, 39, and Nellie, 32, were their children Lorene, 9, Gilbert, 7, and Kenneth, 4 years 8 months old. They were renting their home for $11 per month but had no radio in their home. Milo and Afton had been married for 12 years and Milo was working as a tile setter building fountains. Their youngest son, Kenneth, was born in California, so perhaps Nellie Afton and her husband Milo were visiting her mother and siblings in California at the time of his birth around 1925 or perhaps they were also living there at the time.

By 1940, Nellie and her family had moved to Bountiful, Davis, Utah, and were listed as follows in the census: Milo, 50, Nellie, 42, Lorene, 19, Gilbert, 17, Kenneth, 14, and Patricia A., 10 months old. They were renting their home for for $25 per month. Milo had completed 8th grade, Nellie, 7th, Lorene, 3 years of high school, Gilbert, was in his second year of high school, and Kenneth was in 8th grade. Milo was working as a timekeeper, Lorene was doing house work in a private home and Gilbert was a laborer for the Civilian Conservation Corps.

A 1944 U.S. City Directory listing showed Milo W. and Nellie A. living at 234 W. 2nd, and Milo was working as a guard. In 1951 and 1954 Milo was working as a houseman at the Hotel Ben Lomond and they were living at 248 W. 2nd Street and 159 2nd Street in Ogden, Utah. In 1957 through 1959 they were still living at 159 2nd Street, and Milo was working as a janitor for the LDS regional storehouse in 1957.

Melissa and Fred's daughter, Eva Lenore, married Victor Lee Hornbek, and in 1920 they were living in McGill, White Pine, Nevada, Victor, 23 and Lenore 19, and Victor was working as a carpenter helper in a copper smelter. Two years later when Victor completed his U.S. World War I Draft Registration Card on June 5, 1918, in Ely, White Pine, Nevada, he described himself as being of medium height and build with blue eyes and light hair. He was 21 years old, having been born November 30, 1896, in Meeker, Colorado. He was living in McGill, Nevada, at the time, and gave his father, Elliot Worfield Hornbeck as his nearest relative. He also stated that his father was born in Denver, Colorado. At the time, Victor was working for the New Consolidated Copper Company in McGill, Nevada. In the 1910 census, his father, Elliot, was working as a deputy sheriff in Rio Blanco, Meeker County, Colorado.

By 1930, Eva Lenore and Victor had been married 12 years, and were living in Melvin, Nevada, with their two daughters, Ora Jean, 9, and Dorothy, 5. They owned their own farm valued at $10,000 and Victor was working as a cattle farmer. Their daughter, Ora Jean, evidently was named for Victor's mother, Orah Hornbek.

There are no further public records for the Hornbek's, except for their daughter, Dorothy M. Hornbek, age 41 when she married George J. Head on March 12, 1966, in Imperial, California. Dorothy had been born in California September 3, 1924. Victor Hornbeck passed away in May of 1978 and was living in Fallon, Churchill, Nevada at the time of his death, although Eva Lenore and Victor had been divorced and she married Virgil Morrow, who also passed away in the late 19070's.

Melissa's daughter, Ada, married Earl Maxie Puckett in about 1927 and by 1930 they were living in Compton, Los Angeles County, California, and were listed as follows in the census: Earl M., 27, Ada M., 23, and son Vernon E., 2 years, 8 months old. Earl was working as a chauffeur.

By the 1940 census Earl and Ada had moved from Compton to Inglewood, California, and were listed as follows: Earl M., 37, Ada M., 33, Vernon E., 12, Joan L., 8, and Gerald L., 7. Also living in their home located at 5126 Buford Avenue, was Dora Puckett, Earl's 65-year old widowed mother. They owned their home which was valued at $5,000. Earl was born in California, as were their children, Ada in Utah, and Dora in Ohio. Earl and Ada had 4 years of high school education. Dora had an 8th grade education, Vernon was in the 7th grade, Joan in the 3rd grade and Gerald in the 2nd grade. Earl was working as a truck driver for a gasoline tank trucking company, and for the 50 weeks he worked in 1939 at 40 hours per week his income was $1,800.

Earl passed away March 28, 1986, and was buried in the Green Hills Memorial Park Cemetery in Rancho Palos Verdes, Los Angeles County, California. Ada passed away five years later on the day after Christmas, December 26, 1991, while living in Las Vegas, Clark County, Nevada, and was buried with her husband Earl. She is in crypt number 133 and Earl is in crypt number 132.
