biography

From page 287 of Historic Sumner County, Tennessee: With Genealogies of the Bledsoe, Gage and ... By Jay Guy Cisco

The first of the Parker family came to America in about the second ship after the Mayflower landed at Plymouth Rock. Thomas Parker espoused the cause of Roger William and went with him to the Hartford Plantations. One of his descendants emigrated to Pennsylvania, and afterwards he, or one of his descendants, removed to Hampshire County, Virginia. From this line sprang John Parker, the father of Nathaniel Parker. Nathaniel Parker was born in Hampshire County, Virginia, about 1730. He served under Washington in his attack on the French at Fort Duquense. He also served under Captain Jack against the Indians. He was fond of adventure, as were most men of his day, and wandered through the wilderness of Pennsylvania and Northwestern Virginia, fearless of Indian foes. He may be classed with the “long hunters,” as he spent much of his time hunting and exploring, being out often by himself for long periods of time. He made several journeys from his native State to the Cumberland country and back. While in Sumner County he spent most of his time at Greenfield. Before the Indian troubles ceased he removed his young children (his wife being dead) to Sumner County and built a house near Greenfield. That house is still standing and is occupied by Mr. Robert Bryson. Five years after the death of Colonel Anthony Bledsoe, Mr. Parker married his widow, he being at the time 63 and she 60 years of age. He died in 1803 [SIC: after 1811] and was buried near the site of the old Morgan fort, on lands now belonging to Dr. Johnson. Nathan Parker had seven sons. The three eldest, John, Thomas and Richard, married sisters, Misses Rogers, members of the same family as General George Rogers Clark. The eldest, John, never came to Tennessee. The other sons were: Nathaniel, Jr., Isaac, Aaron and Robert. From these sons of Nathaniel Parker have descended many prominent people of Sumner County and elsewhere.

This profile is for the Nathaniel Parker (1724-1811) who 1st married Elizabeth Scott, 2nd married Mary (Ramsey) Bledsoe and migrated from Hampshire County, VA. (now Mineral County, W.V.) to Greenfield, Sumner County, TN.

NOT to be confused with Nathaniel Parker (1723-1797) of Gloucester County, Virginia, who is stated to have married Ann Clayton. See: Nathaniel Parker of Gloucester County for the Nathaniel Parker who married Ann Clayton.

Some researchers have confused the two Nathaniel Parkers which are not biologically related according to DNA analysis. This Nathaniel Parker (1724-1811) and his father John Parker who died in 1760 Hampshire County, VA. belong to Parker yDNA Family Group #18.

The first of the PARKER family came to America in about the second ship after the Mayflower landed at Plymouth Rock. Thomas Parker espoused the cause of Roger WILLIAMS and went with him to Hartford Plantations. One of his descendants emigrated to Pennsylvania, and afterwards he, or one of his descendants, removed to Hampshire County, Virginia. From this line sprang John PARKER, the father of Nathaniel PARKER.

Nathaniel PARKER was born in Hampshire County, (West) Virginia, about 1730 (this would have been Orange County at the time, given that Hampshire was created in 1754 from parts of Augusta and Frederick counties, and both of these counties sprang from Orange County in 1738 and 1743, respectively). He served under [George] Washington in his attack on the French at Fort Duquesne. He also served under Captain Jack against the Indians. He was fond of adventure as were most of the men of his day, and wandered through the wilderness of Pennsylvania and Northwest Virginia, fearless of Indian foes. The 1730 birth and 1803 death of the above Nathaniel Parker are from Jay Guy Cisco's 'Historic Sumner County, TN.' ( http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~tnsumner/parker2.htm ) published in 1909 and based upon oral history as given by Nathaniel Parker descendants 100 years later. Cisco lists the birth date as about, while this profile makes it absolute as 1730. A grandaughter of Nathaniel Parker's family bible states he was born in 1724. This profile lists his death as February 25th, which matches the date of Nathaniel Parker's 1811 Will. The 1789-1822 Sumner County, TN. Will index lists two for Nathaniel Parker. The 1st dated 20 Sep 1790 is actually a Power of Attorney for the purchase of land. The 2nd is the 25 Feb. 1811 Will. (See: http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~tnsumner/wb1pz.htm )

And this profile states that the wife of Nathaniel Parker who migrated from Hampshire County, VA. to Sumner County, TN about 1790 was Ann Clayton. Between an 1851 letter written by a 1st cousin of Nathaniel Parker, and the 1828 Francis Duffy family bible (Duffy's wife was Pamelia A. Parker, daughter of Thomas Parker, and granddaughter of Nathaniel Parker) they show that the 1st wife of Nathaniel Parker was Elizabeth Scott. • Message 1 of 1 , Oct 21, 2005

We, as Parker descendants, have seen in many submissions to genealogy sites, the use of then name of "Elizabeth Taliaferro" as the wife of John Parker who was born about 1680 or later, and who died in Hampshire Co VA in Nov. 1760.

He left a will naming his wife as only "Elizabeth" and also named his six children -Richard, Elizabeth, Robert, Catherine, Nathanial, and Aaron and one grandson Thomas Parker to share equally with his children in his estate.

We are looking for anyone who can add info to or dispute this statement that Elizabeth Taliaferro, dtr of a Robert Taliaferro, was the woman whom John Parker married.

His wife is also seen in sites with maiden name of TANDY, BOND, GILES, and possibly one of two more surnames.

Thanks -Jim ( James Campbell Parker) 5th great grandson of John and "Elizabeth" Parker thru their son Robert and his wife Hannah Peters.
