Nicholas Wain, of Chapel Croft, the immigrant, probably b. ca. 1650, d. 4 Feb 1721/2, Northern Liberties, Philadelphia, PA, md. 1 8mo. (Oct) 1673, Jane Turner, daughter of William Turner of Windyates, Yorkshire, at the house of his stepfather William Birket, called Chapel Croft, in Lancashire. In 1672, he received a holding at Youlstonwood, in the Forest of Bolland, which had belonged to his father, and in 1676, he received lands in Slainmorrow from his uncle Robert Walbancke. In 1682, presumably in preparation for his trip to the New World, he passed at least some of his lands to his stepfather William Birket*7
. The "Settle certificate", written 07d 04mo. 1682, (see in Documents) was a well-known certificate of removal granted to several members of the Settle Monthly Meeting in Yorkshire, including Nicholas Wain, his uncles Cuthbert and William Hayhurst, and several others, most of them related to either the Wains or the Hayhursts. It has often been incorrectly reported that they came with William Penn aboard the Welcome, but it has been proven that Nicholas Wain and his family actually came over on the Lamb, on which Nicholas Wain loaded goods on 26 June 1682*8. https://www.welcomesociety.org/crossings.html
He settled originally on the Neshaminy Creek in Bucks co., PA, and the first meeting of the Neshaminy (or Middleton) Monthly Meeting were held in his house. In 1696, he moved to Northern Liberties, Philadelphia co., PA. A prominent figure in early Pennsylvania politics, he served as Sheriff of Bucks county and as Justice of the Peace. During the period 1687-1717, he was elected to the Provincial Assembly of Pennsylvania on thirteen occasions, five times from Bucks county, and eight times from Philadelphia county. His will (see in Documents) was dated 30 11mo. (Jan) 1721/2, and proved 19 Mar 1722.
