Richard Wallne or Wain, of Burholme in Bolland, Yorkshire, d. 7 2mo. (Apr) 1659, Settle MM, md. (presumably in the late 1640's) Jane Rudd, daughter of Edward Rudd of Knowlemere, Yorkshire. It was probably in the early 1650's (certainly by 1654) that the Wains became converts to the Quaker faith. After the death of Richard Wain, Jane (Rudd) Wain md. 2nd*4 , 31 8mo. (Oct) 1667, at the house of Roben Walbancke of Newton (husband of her sister Ellen), William Birket of Newton. Jane (Rudd) (Wain) Birket was still living on 9 Apr 1696, as a widow, when Richard Scott and Jennet Stackhouse were married at her house at Slainmorrow. Children of Richard Wain and Jane (Rudd) Wain**:

The account by McCracken in The Welcome Claimants makes a serious error by offering a "correction" to earlier accounts of the family, claiming that the Jane Wain who married William Birket was the sister of Nicholas Wain (the immigrant) rather than his mother. Since the marriage record itself explicitly refers to the bride as daughter of Edward Rudd, her identity as the mother of Nicholas Wain is well established, and the earlier accounts were correct on this matter. McCracken was confused by the burial record of a Jane Wain, widow, on 6 8mo. 1669, thinking that this was Jane (Rudd) Wain, widow of Richard Wain. Since we know from other sources that Richard's father Nicholas also had a wife named Jane, it is very likely that this burial record refers to her.

That Jane (Rudd) Wain was the mother of Anne and Edward is clear, since their birth records say so. However, I know of no source which actually proves that Jane was the mother of Nicholas. Since no other marriage of Richard Wain is known, or even vaguely indicated, the chances of an error here are very slim. Even though this is a very picky point, it at least needs to be mentioned.

Most accounts seem to include a son Richard, who came to America and died in PA on 26 Mar 1698, but a source for the relationship is not given. Although it may be true, I have never seen any evidence which proves that he was a member of this family.
