One of five Norman brothers who fled Normandy and settled in Aversa in Southern Italy, establishing the first Norman presence there.

Orderic Vitalis (XXVI, 47) records that Osmand Drengot killed Guillaume Repostel while hunting in the forest at the court of Duke Robert of Normandy after Repostel boasted loudly of having seduced Drengot's daughter. Other accounts (Aimé du Montcassin et Pierre le Diacre) say it was Osmond's brother Gilbert. In any case, all five brothers fled to Rome for an audience with the Pope, and there they met Melo de Bari, who apparently became their protector in Italy.

4. OSMOND (-[after 1022]). The Chronica Monasterii Casinensis records that "Giselbertus…qui et Buttericus…[cum] quatuor fratribus suis, Rainulfo, Asclittino, Osmundo, atque Rodulfo" arrived in Capua (after Gilbert was banished from Normandy) where they joined "Melus", dated to [1015/16] from the context[369]. Guillaume of Jumièges records that “Osmundus Drengotus...miles” left for Apulia after he killed “Willelmum cognomento Repostellum militem” during a hunting expedition, in the presence of “Roberti ducis” [which appears to anachronistic][370]. Orderic Vitalis records that “Osmundus cognomento Drengotus” killed "Willermum Repostellum", who had boasted of having seduced his daughter, and fled "prius in Britanniam, deinde in Angliam, postremo Beneventum cum filiis et nepotibus", being granted “oppidum” by “principe Beneventanorum”[371]. Amatus records that they joined forces at Capua with Melus, another exile from Apulia, and together returned to fight the Greeks[372]. The Chronica Monasterii Casinensis records that "Stephano autem, Melo et Petro nepotibus præfati Melo" were granted "comitatum Cominensis" (by Emperor Heinrich II) together with "in auxilium Normannos, Giselbertum, Gosmannum, Stigandum, Torstainum balbum, Gualterium de Canosa et Ugonem Falluccam, cum aliis decem et octo", dated to [1022] from the context[373]. Chalandon identifies these Normans as "Gilbert, Osmond, Asclettin, Toustain le Bègue, Gautier de Canisy et Hugues Falluca"[374].

La casata dei Drengot (anche noti come Drengot di Quarrel, dal poleonimo francese de Quarrel) è una famiglia normanna protagonista delle vicende storiche della Campania e della Basilicata.
I capostipiti della famiglia giunsero in Italia (1016 circa) e si posero al servizio dei principi longobardi del Mezzogiorno.
ORIGINI :
La famiglia Drengot era originaria di Carreaux, vicino Avesnes-en-Bray, a est di Rouen; da Quarrelis o Quadrellis, la forma latina di Carreaux, assunse il cognome "de Quarrel".
Secondo altre fonti, i Drengot provenivano da Alençon. Il cognome sarebbe di origine scandinava[1]: la parola Drengot deriverebbe da TREGR GUPR (pron. dreng gode), "uomo di valore".
Altri testi di storia danese testimonierebbero l'origine scandinava dei Drengot, passati attraverso la Francia per giungere in Italia.[2]

Tra i primi Vichinghi immigrati in Francia al seguito di Rollone c’era anche la famiglia Drengot, probabilmente originaria della Danimarca, o di un’isola del suo arcipelago, come sembra suggerire la radice linguistica -got.
Il suo capostipite, Roberto Drengot, aveva ottenuto proprio da Rollone il principato di Quarrel (oggi Carreaux), piccolo feudo nei dintorni dell’odier­na cittadina di Gournay-en-Bray; attraversata dal fiume Epte, affluente della Senna, essa è posta a pochi chilometri ad est della città di Rouen e a nord di Parigi.

Da diverse fonti, con un recente studio, si é “ricostruita” una ipotesi di albero genealogico dei Drengot con la seguente sequenza (dove le date di nascita sono ricavate per “probabilità” tenuto conto delle date di morte più o meno certe): Roberto Drengot (880-930) – Riccardo (906-948) – Rodolfo (930-987) – Riccardo (955-1000).

I Drengot che troviamo in Italia sono figli di Riccardo Riccardo (955-1000).'

Come ci riportano le Fonti (Amato di Montecassino) nel Principato di Quarrel, nel secondo decennio dopo l’anno Mille, due signori normanni, Giselberto (985 (997,?) -1018) detto Batterico e Guglielmo detto Repostello nutrivano tale inimicizia tra loro che Giselberto uccise Gu­glielmo. Saputolo Roberto Conte di Nor­mandia, minacciò di far morire Giselberto. Costui allora, per sfuggire all’ira del suo signore, prendendo in sua compagnia quattro suoi fratelli, Rainulfo (980-1047), Asclettino (982-1030), Osmond (983-1035) e Rodolfo (986-1042) ed alquanti altri patrioti con armi e caval­li, abbandonato il patrio terreno si recò in Italia.

Confrontando, mediante la Istoria della fondazione di Aversa del Fabozzi, quanto riporta l’Ostiense e la Cronaca di Giovanni Berardo, monaco del monastero di Pescara, che raccoglie incartamenti dello stesso monastero disponendoli in ordine cronologico, viene fissata la data dell’arrivo dei Normanni in Italia nell’anno 1016: «An. Ab Incarnat. Domini 1016. Normanni Melo Duce coeperunt expugnare Apuliam».
