Disputed Origins
From https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Massie-46
English birth and christening records were searched for Peter Massie/Massey No records were found that support the birth of Peter Massey to Thomas Massey and Judith Massey of Malpas, Cheshire, England, and the early birth dates of Thomas Massey and Judith Brereton Massey make it almost certain that they are not the parents of Peter Massie. Because of this fact Thomas Massey and Judith Brereton Massey have been removed as the parents of Peter.
Thomas and Judith Massey did have several children, not previously documented, including a Thomas Massey b about 1622. Although a connection has not been firmly established, it is possible that their son Thomas Massey/Massie, who was christened in 1622 could have been the father of Peter. This Thomas Massey, whose christening record is found in Malpas, Cheshire records, documents his surname and the surname of his father as "Massie".
Disputed Wives
Peter is said to have been married two times, however the names of Peter's spouses are unknown.
Peter Massie is said to have married Penelope Ashley-Cooper, illegitimate daughter of Anthony Ashley-Cooper, Earl of Shaftesbury, Her relationship to Anthorny Ashley-Cooper and even her existence has been vigorously disputed and largely dismissed by many researchers as a fabrication. While Ashley-Cooper's Journal and private papers do reveal that he had two daughters, his writings clearly state that both, sadly were stillborn.
He is also said to have married Lucelia Massie, {Fictional}, however the only evidence to support this claim is based on her entry in poorly sourced family trees. While several Poindexters are found in the records of New Kent, Virginia and the parish records of St Peter's parish church no records for a Lucelia Poindexter (Massie) have been found.
Children
(Still a work in progress)
- George Massie is though to have been born to Peter Massie and unknown spouse in Chester, England prior to his father's immigration to Virginia Colony. Wife unknown, had issue.
- John. Had issue.
- Thomas. Married 1) unknown woman 2) Mary Walker.
- Charles. Married Ann Macon.
- (perhaps) Sarah Penelope. Married John Johnston.
- (perhaps) Lucretia (perhaps Elizabeth) Massie, who married a John Johnson. Nothing is found in St Peter's parish records for Lucretia, however John Johnson, the father of several children, including one named Massie Johnson, is listed in the parish register. Massie Johnson was baptised Feb 12, 1705. [45] Lucretia and John Johnson are mentioned in New Kent, Va Quaker records as being husband and wife. Although she is often referred to as Lucretia it is thought she is actually Elizabeth Massie who is found in the St Peter's Parish Register, New Kent, Virginia from 1680 to 1787 [45].
Disputed Children
- Cecilia Poindexter Anderson Is not a proven daughter.
- “Many Massie trees contain a child named Lucretia Massey, who is supposed to have married a John Johnson. Examination of the St Peter's parish register doesn't provide support as there is not a Lucretia Massey found.”
Notes
- Patented land in America in 1698.
- Peter Massie is probably the father of Thomas, but to my knowledge this has not been proven.

Peter Massie (or Massey) said to be the son of Thomas Massey, of Coddington, Cheshire, England immigrated to the American colony of Virginia about 1677. He patented land in New Kent, built an impressive brick plantation house, one of the earliest in New Kent. He is reported to have married Penelope Ashley-Cooper a daughter of Sir Anthony Ashley-Cooper, however this is unproved. He was a member of St Peter's parish church, New Kent where George and Martha Washington were members. He died in December, 1719 at his plantation and is said to have been buried in what later became known as the Savage cemetery, located near the original Massie home site. ∼
