BOTHA, Philip Rudolph (Greytown, Natal 30.6.1851 - Doornberg, near Ventersburg. OFS 6.3.190l) He was the elder brother of Gen Louis Botha. At the commencement of the SA War he lived at Vrede. OFS, so joined the Boer forces there. He was appointed asst field general, first coming into prominence at Paardeberg in attempting to free Gen Cronje. His rearguard actions at Poplar Grove ensured the escape of President Steyn and President Kruger. He commanded the Harrismith Commando and was forced back to Winburg and the Brandwater Basin, but escaped with Gen De Wet. He then operated in the Springkaansnek area where he lured Major D. Laing into an ambush near Lindley in which Laing was killed. Various skirmishes followed in the Ventersburg district. Gen Botha was killed while storming a British post near Ventersburg.
