His parentage is unknown and very little is known of his brothers and sisters, but he was born in Leonardtown, St. Mary's County, MD in 1752, and married Nellie Mattingly in that state. His second wife was Mary Moore. They were married in Washington County, KY on 10/8/1823. He served throughout the whole of the Revolutionary War. The records in the Bureau of Pensions show that he served from January 1776 to July 6, 1783 as a private soldier in Captain Allen Thomas' Company, Colonel Smallwood's Regiment, Maryland Militia. He was engaged in the battles of Long Island, White Plains, Monmouth, Brandywine, Germantown, Gates' Defeat, Camden, Guilford Court House, Eutaw Springs, and Cowpens. His immediate descendants understood that he also served with Pennsylvania troops.

It is claimed by his descendants and particularly by those nearest to him that he was one of the three men who captured Major Andre at Tarrytown, NewYork and there has for many years been in the family a painting showing this scene. It is furthermore claimed that through carelessness he allowed his name to appear on the Congressional and pension records as "Paulding" instead of Spalding.

Robert Marion Spaldng I remembers him as an old man suffering from a wound inflicted during the Revolutionary War.

He emigrated to Kentucky in 1785 and died in Marion County in 1843.

He had three sons and three daughters by his first wife and one son and one daughter by his second wife. They were all Catholics. The following children were born at places and dates shown:
