He married Annie Bowers and fathered James Burd (b. 10/03/55), Hannah E. (b. @1857), Sarah Elanora (b. 01/27/59), Anna K. (b. @1861), Reuben Henry (b. 11/02/64), Benjamin Franklin (b. 08/28/68), and John S. (b. @1870). In 1860, he was a cooper living in Marietta, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, and stood 5' 5" tall with black hair and hazel eyes.

A Civil War veteran, he enlisted at the stated age of thirty-five in Columbia, Lancaster County, August 22, 1861, and mustered into federal service at Harrisburg sometime during October as a private with Co. K, 45th Pennsylvania Infantry.
