R' Elias Munk

MUNK, Elias, Born in 1818 in Inowrocław (Inowrazlaw), Prov. Poznan, Gest. July 30, 1899 in Bad Ems Son of Rb. Michel-Löb M., who moved to Danziger Oberrt shortly after his birth. is called. After the bar mitzvah he goes to Poznan to study with Ak. Eger, after his death in 1837 he switched to Jakob Ettlinger's yeshiva in Altona; also studies general school subjects there. April 30, 1845 imm. Berlin, a student of Öttinger and Michael Sachs at the same time. Has to interrupt his studies because of the revolutionary events of 1848, comes to Halberstadt in the house of the orthodox manufacturer Aron Hirsch and becomes friends with his son-in-law Esr. Hildesheimer. Teacher at the school of Samuel Enoch in Altona and employee at his Zion Guardian. 1852 teacher at the Hamburg Talmud Tora School, marries Schönche Hildesheimer, the sister of Rb. Esriel H. has a study group in his home. As a successor of Isa. Hollander 1873 Stiftsrb. at the Altonaer Lehrhaus, since 1885 also Dajan as a successor of Jecheskel Joelsohn, during Oberrb's illness. He manages Löb together with his colleague Jekew Cohn. His sons Leo M. (1851-1919) and Esra M. (1867-1940) were Rb. in Marburg or at Adass Jisroel in Berlin; Another son Meier M. (1869-1928) worked there as a teacher.

הגאון רבי אליהו הכהן מונק (תקע"ה-תרנ"ט), בנו של הגאון רבי מיכל ליב (יחיאל אריה) מונק ראב"ד דנציג. תלמיד מובהק הגאון רבי עקיבא אייגר בישיבת פוזנא (יש אומרים שהיה גם תלמיד הגאון בעל ה"בית מאיר"). לאחר פטירת רבו רבי עקיבא אייגר, עבר רבי אליהו (בשנת תקצ"ח בערך) ללמוד בישיבת אלטונה אצל בעל ה"ערוך לנר". באותה תקופה נקשר בקשרי ידידות עם רעו רבי געטש שלזינגר, קשר שנשמר כל ימי חייהם - ואף נהיו מחותנים במשך השנים, כאשר רבי משה שלזינגר בנו של רבי געטש, נשא את העני בתו של רבי אליהו (אף בדור השלישי של נכדי רבי געטש ורבי אליהו, נישאו כמה מהם זה לזה). רבי אליהו כיהן כמרביץ תורה באלטונה, ומעורכי כתב העת "שומר ציון הנאמן". משנת תרל"ג כיהן כרב ב"קלויז" בהמבורג, ומשנת תר"מ דיין הקהילה בהמבורג. בניו ונכדיו כיהנו ברבנות בגרמניה, אנגליה וארה"ב
