About Rabbi Michael Hersch Tauber
Michael Hersch Tauber was a Rabbi and Hebrew schoolteacher. He was born in Holesov, Moravia in 1771, the son of Aaron and Sheva (Knopfelmacher) Tauber. He was married there on 2 Nov 1792 to Anna [Channa] Zwillinger, dau of Abraham Zwillinger (1754-1824) and Freydl (Zwillinger) Zwillinger (1757-1835). Her paternal grandfather, R' Markus Zwillinger (1732-1794), is listed as witness in the marriage entry.
Over the years, he resided in several different households in Holesov's Jewish quarter: in 1792, he was living in household #42; in 1797, in household #7; from 1803 through 1814, in household #43; in 1815, in household #7; in 1816, in household #6; later in 1816, in household #47; and from 1821 through 1826, back in household #43. However, in October 1799, when his daughter Chaja was born, he and wife Anna are seen living in household #10 in the town of Koritschan, where he served as a rabbi and kept a separate residence.
In July 1826, his wife Anna died in House No. 43 in Holesov. In 1831, Michael was still residing in Holesov when a document was drawn up referencing 120 florins he had received many years earlier as the dowry of his wife “Cheila” [aka Channa] Zwillinger.. Michael Tauber died in Holesov on 18 October 1847. His age is given as 75 [he was actually 76] and he is listed as familiant #127. He was buried in Holesov on 20 October 1847.
Gravestone still standing: "Michael Cvi, the teacher and educator of the children and young men of Israel, buried on 10 Cheshvan 5608 [20 Oct 1847]"
