About Reginald Foster, II

Reginald Foster and Isaac Foster (probably his son) both signed a petition in favor of John and Elizabeth Procter, stating that they did not believe them to be guilty of witchcraft. Sadly, it was to no avail - John Procter was executed anyway, and his wife's life was spared only because she had a baby that was soon due. The signing of such a petition would have placed the signers and their families in danger of themselves being persecuted and tried.

Renold was constable of Ipswich in 1669. In Nov 1674 Renold was released from training and was to pay 5 shillings to the company. In Sep 1676 the court ordered Renold Foster, Robert Lord and Moses Pengry to lay out a highway to Greene Creek.

Daniel Warner wrote, "my ante foster had 3 sons jsaac, john and Nathaniel; and 6 daughters, Elizabeth Judith, Mary, Sarah, Neomy and Elenor."

Goodman Brabrucke tried to sell Renold and Elizabeth meat from a drowned heifer, saying that they could have it cheaply as they had "a great many small children". Unfortunately, when the investigated they found that the heifer had been dead for three days.

Renold's will is dated 11 Jul 1704; it was proved on 10 Jan 1708.

Biography

In an 1876 article in The New England Historical and Genealogical Register, Renold/Reginald Foster was said to have been born in England c1636, the son of Reginald and Judith Foster who emigrated to Ipswich, Massachusetts circa 1638. [1] A different source, published in 1959, gives Renold's birth as about 1628. In the will of his father, Renald Foster, Renald was named following his brother, Abraham, and before brothers Isaac, William and Jacob.[2] Additionally, he married Elizabeth about 1652 based on the birth of ther first child in 1653, [1], which would have made him about 16 years old, with her being 17 years old as of that date (based on the 1876 NEHGR article). Renold, in his 1704 will, said that he was "very weak and crazy in body" by virtue of his old age[3]; his age in 1704 would have been 76, if he had been born in 1628, which reasonably explains his "old age" comment.

His father Renald Foster, in his will written on April 30, 1680, left son Renold, the land of mine on which he built at house, with uplands and marsh containing about 50, acres. He to pay his sister, Sarah, wife of William Story out of it. [4]

He married Elizabeth Dane, daughter of John Jr. and niece of Rev. Francis. He lived in Chebacco (ipswich), Massachusetts. [1]

He died December 28, 1707 at Chebacco. [3] [1]

In his will, written on July 11, 1704 he left bequests to: [3]

wife Elizabeth
sons Isaac, John and Nathaniel Foster
daughters Elizabeth (eldest), Judith and Elenor [3]
The first inventory of his estate was taken on January 14, 1707/8 with land and buildings assessed at L326. [3]

On February 22, 1724/5, a second inventory was taken for the settlement of the estate, showing a value of L112 for his common right in the 'neck lot, thatch lot and wood lot' and clear of all charges'. This was divided into shares, with portions going to:

Isaac Foster - double share L32
John Foster - L16
Nath'l Foster -L16
Eliz Foster -L16
Judith Wood - L 16
(illegible) ?Elenor/Ednah - L16 [3]
As the second estate inventory was taken in 1724/5, his widow probably was deceased at that time. [3]
