About Rev. Thomas Dodson, Sr.
A Patriot of the American Revolution for VIRGINIA. DAR Ancestor # A032939
Thomas Dodson was born about 1707 in North Farnham Parish, Richmond County, English Colony of Virginia. He was a son of Thomas Dodson and Mary Durham. Thomas married sometime before 1725 Elizabeth Rose, daughter of John and Mary Rose of Northumberland County. Elizabeth was the mother of all his children. [1]
From http://listsearches.rootsweb.com/th/read/DODSON/2006-10/1161613686 :
"Thomas and Elizabeth Rose Dodson engaged in a 1734 land transaction with Thomas’ parents. This may have been property Thomas Senior had given to his son, as about this time, Thomas Jr. appears to have sold his Richmond County land and moved his wife and then five children up the Rappahannock River to what was then Prince William County and is now Fauquier County. Other Dodson family members also moved to the area about the same time, as did Elizabeth Dodson’s sister Mary Stamps and her family.
"Dodson family historian Bill Randolph pointed out Thomas Dodson Jr. eventually owned a lot of land. With inheritances from his father, uncle and father-in-law, he was in a better financial position to purchase property than many at the time. The notes of Rev. Elias Dodson stated the Thomas Dodson who married a Rose, “was rich and was called a great gentleman”.
"On May 3, 1742 Thomas Dodson sat on a grand jury in Richmond County, so obviously he was considered a trustworthy man. . . . .
"On May 8, 1761 Thomas Dodson. made a deed of gift to his son Thomas Dodson, Jr for "natural love and affection . . . the parcel in his actual possession part of two tracts on the Mine Branch in Steward's Line . . . in Faulkner's line . . . 150 acres. The same day he deed 100 acres to his son George, also for natural love and affection, of "part of a tract of land purchased by the said Thos. Dodson of Thomas Faulkner". This would then indicate Thomas Dodson the elder purchased the land which he then gave away to his sons. (Some of this property was sold jointly by the two Thomas Dodson families in 1766. George sold his property at the same time; the Dodson moved to Pittsylvania County
that year).
"Thomas Dodson did business with Dumfrie's Store of Fauquier County in the 1750's.
"Sometime around the middle of the century, Baptist evangelists began to make inroads into the staunchly Anglican colonies. As with many religious issues, change did not come easily and there was a great amount of controversy. Stories of colonial Virginia are rife with the great dissention caused by people who embraced a new way to worship God. Among those people touched by the Great Enlightenment were members of the Dodson family.
"Thomas Dodson Jr. was an original member of Broad Run Baptist Church, founded on
December 3, 1762. He was baptized there and several of his children also joined the church. His brother and sister-in-law, Joshua and Ruth Dodson, also were founding members. There is no record of Elizabeth's participation (which is noteworthy since women are listed in the rolls).
"The Dodson family is full of Baptist preachers from about that time on, including three in
Thomas and Elizabeth Dodson’s immediate family. It appears that the Primitive, or Hardshell, Baptist Dodson families began to move to Pittsylvania and Halifax County about 1766, though some were there as early as 1753 when the area first opened up for settlers. Whether the Dodsons were primarily interested in new land or a new place to worship God, we cannot say, but the Hanks family members who went south at the same time also were Baptists."
Thomas Dodson Jr. had a son we know as Thomas "Second Fork" Dodson--because he bought a farm on the second fork of a creek in Pittsylvania County. He had some problems with the Broad Run Baptist Church:
"Like his father, Thomas “Second Fork” also joined the Broad Run Baptist Church. He was baptized on August 11, 1765. His faith may not have grown as much as the minister of the church hoped, for on November 11, 1769 when he was dismissed to the Halifax church, he and fellow member Joshua Scurlock went "under censure to the church at Birch Creek to be under their care"."
Jesse Dodson was the son of the Reverend Thomas Dodson and his wife, Elizabeth Rose, of North Farnham, Richmond County, VA.
Jesse and several of his sons, Jessee, Jr., Elijah and Elisha, are included in this tax list.
