About Richard Hanby, of Northampton
Richard is the first member of this line of the Hamby/Hanby family known to have taken up residence in the American Colonies. Exactly when or how he got there is uncertain, but he was certainly resident in Northampton County, VA, by 1648, when his mother ("Margery Hamby widow") had 35 head of cattle sent to him at that location. http://wc.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=ann_blomq... He actually had three wives: 1) Elizabeth Gethings (d. between 1651 and 1656), by whom he had William (c. 1650-1702); 2) Mary Chilcott(?), who had been married to one Richard Buckland (from whom she requested a divorce on the grounds of flagrant adultery), by whom he had daughters Rebecca (c. 1657-1682) and Elizabeth (c. 1659-after 1716); 3) Susannah (last name believed to be Daniel or Daniels), by whom he had five sons: Daniel (c. 1666-c. 1710), Richard (c. 1669-c. 1710), John (c. 1672-1719), Charles (c. 1674-1720), and Joseph (c. 1676-1710). But only Joseph's line carried on the family name in Northampton County, so far as can be determined, and he inherited no land and the family became quite obscure and hard to follow.
