Biography

Richard Harrison, eldest child of Richard and Ellen Harrison, was born at West Kirby on March 31, 1595. He 1st Married Anne 5 DEC 1612, maiden name and issues unknown. He 2nd married on July 28, 1619 Margaret Picke [11], who was born in about 1598. She was the daughter of Thomas Picke, who was born in 1568 in West Kirby and died in 1643. Following the death of his father Richard, he and his wife Margaret came to New England with his seven children in 1638 and New Haven in 1640. He was one of a company of proprietors who took possession of the settlement of Tokoket, later called Branford, in New Haven Colony in the spring of 1644. It was part of the land bought from the Mattabesech Indians in 1638 by the first 500 Puritan settlers lead by the Rev. John Davenport and Theophilus Eaton, a wealthy London merchant.

The settlement was initially known as Quinnipiac, its Indian name, but was renamed in 1640 for the port city of Newhaven in England. New Haven, along with three adjacent towns, formed the New Haven Colony in 1643 with Theophilus Eaton, the first governor. Richard Harrison took the oath of allegiance at New Haven on August 5, 1644. He signed the divisions of land at Branford on July 1, 1646. This document is apparently the first existing record of the Branford settlement and is called Old Harrison in Branford records. Richard Harrison died at Branford on October 25, 1653. Four of his at least 10 children [Richard, Elizabeth, Samuel and Marie] married and settled in New Haven Colony but later, in 1666, moved to Newark, New Jersey.

Notes

"i'm having trouble identifying the wife of Richard Harrison (1595-1653). Some genealogies posted on the web have his wife as Sarah Yorke and others identify her as Margaret Picke. Both lines indicate Richard was born in England and immigrated to Branford, New Haven, CT. Can anyone give documented proof of the "real" wife?" No evidence to support marriage to Sarah Yorke. Disconnected Feb 2018

There is much controversy regarding the following: Another son Benjamin Harrison d. 1648; m. Mary ------; settled in the James River, Virginia Colony. He was the ancestor of the Presidents Harrisons and Signer of the Declaration of Independence. 1st Clerk of the Council of Virginia in 1633 and Member of the House of Burgesses in 1642. A land grant on record in the Virginia Land Registry Office was made to him for 200 acres in "Warrosquinoake County", July 20, 1635. The house was known as "Wakefield", now Surrey County, on the James River and is the oldes of the many Harrisons homes in Virginia. It was burned by Benedict Arnold during the Revolution, but has since been rebuilt and still remains as one of the famous beautiful old houses along the James.

Richard's first wife's maiden name is uncertain. A marriage between a Richard Harrison and Mary Roue was found in London, England. Church of England records, no date. [3]

His children were: Richard, Samuel, Mary (or Maria, married November 27, 1662, Thomas Pierson, Sr brother of Rev. Abraham), and Elizabeth."[7] According to records, all children were born in England in West Kirby, before he and Margaret arrived in New England in 1640.[8]
