Paragraph 2 - As mentioned earlier, Richard Lee II was a man of stature
in his community. During his transaction records, he was referred to as
a PLANTER and as ESQUIRE. The term Planter related to LAND HOLDINGS and
PLANTATION OPERATION. The "Esquire" TITLE was given to men of stature
and influence in the community. Pg. 17.
Paragraph 3 - Records of the Albermarle County Virginia Court will reveal
that Richard Lee II owned at least two tracts in 1750. On February 20,
1755, he recorded a survey of 370 acres that joined his existing property
and that of his probable brother, Thomas. This tract lay on FISHPOND
CREEK in Albemarle County. The tract plot included a road that ran
east-west and butted into Burnette Road, present day 618, which ran in a
north-south direction. The first road was known as BEARD'S ROAD, present
day ROUTE 614, and it crossed FISHPOND CREEK. Reference was made to this
survey in Chapter II. Pg. 17
William C. Wooldrige has a deed that refers to a tract that belonged to
his ancestors and lay on both sides of the "Holliday River and both sides
of the North and South forks of that river. The tract contained 240
Acres and the lower half joined the tracts of land known as "RICHARD
LEE's OLD PLACE". Of course, this "lower" meant Southern and it was the
FISHPOND CREEK area. The date of this deed was February 14, 1791. The
Richard Lee place must have been at least (50 or 60 years old) if it ws
to be called "OLD PLACE". Pg. 17
In 1773, Richard II was listed as having one tiltable in his household.
Of course, this could have been Richard himself. As reported earlier,
Archibald was living with Richard in 1774 and he had become old enough to
be listed as a tiltable, consequently Richard was charged with two
tiltable for that year. Although most of the counties contained in this
report listed the number of acres owned by the individuals' no land
holdings for Buckingham tax payers were listed. At this point, it should
be noted out that for many years, even from the beginning of the COLONY,
TAXES were levied, not on property, but on persons as such, therefore, a
tithe or tiltable was, generally speaking, a person who was subject to
TAXATION. Usually all males above sixteen years of age and servants of
both sexes above that age were listed as a tithe and the customary tax
was so imposed. Pg. 17/18
The Buckingham County land tax RECORDS of 1782, the first such listing,
reported that RICHARD LEE OWNED 400 Acres and the Personal Property Tax
list for that year listed Richard as being levy free, indicating that he
had passed the age for paying such a tax. The report showed that he
owned one Horse and eight head of cattle. In 1783, he owned one horse
and six head of cattle. Richard was not listed in this report for 1784
and 1785, however, he was shown as having three white tiltable, four
horses and no cattle in 1786. In 1787, he was listed as a tiltable and
owned one horse and three head of cattle. In 1789, he was listed as a
tiltable and his son by Elizabeth Miller was listed...

It appears that THOMAS LEE was in Goochland by 1734 when he buys land from Stephen Lacy, then THOMAS LEE AND WIFE ELIZABETH sell this land in l740/l74l. He was in Goochland Co.Va. l743 when he buys the land on Fish Pond Creek adj. Henry Chiles. In l755 both Thomas Lee and Richard Lee are shown as being on Fish Pond Creek. By l760 Thomas Lee deeds land to Peter Lee on the ss Fish Pond Cr adj. Henry Chiles so this is part of same land he bought in l743 which was adjacent to Henry Chiles. Apparently Thomas Lee was still alive in l767 from the document in Buckingham Co.Va. which is partly illegible. Perhaps research on both Stephen Lacy and Henry Chiles might shed some light on this Thomas Lee and also research in St. James Parish of Goochland Co.
I would appreciate any imput any of you have as to your thought on the Thomas Lee of Goochland being the same Thomas Lee of Fish Pond Cr. and the possible father of Peter Lee and Richard Lee. I believe it is established pretty well that Evan Lee was a son of Thomas Lee.

Transcript of the Miller Lee (son of Richard Henry Lee and Mary Elizabeth Betsy Miller) letter as it appears in the book on Gresham Lee by R.E. Lee. The transcript was provided to R.E. Lee by a Barbara L. McKelvey, a Miller Lee descendant.

Rusk City March 30, 1850

I, Miller Lee, was born on the first day of July 1769 in Buckingham Co. in the State of Virginia. My father's name was Richard Lee, raised in Buckingham Co. and lived there most of his life until just before he died. He moved to Ballston, near Arlington, Va. There my mother died. He then moved to Jackson, Tn. where he died. His father came from England, his mother from Wales. My mother's name before marriage was Elizabeth Miller. Her father and mother were from Germany. She was born in the State of Delaware and she moved to Virginia. The Indians killed her father. Her mother died when she was about 12 years of age. She was my father's second wife. Richard was the first child, then Miller, John, Barnett, Agnes, Arthur who died at three weeks of age, then Stephen, the last. My wife's father was James Carson. Her mother before marriage was Mary Helm. They were raised nearby so to the north. Her parents moved to Campbell Co. Va. There James Carson died. His widow went to West Tenn. There she died at about 94 years of age. James Carson was 70. My wife before marriage was Margaret Carson. We were married in Campbell Co., Va. on 6th of Jan. 1798. About a year later moved to Logan Co. in a few more years to Butler Co. Lived there about 12 years. Then back to Logan Co. on or near the "Big Whipporwill." Lived there three years, then to Christian Co. There we buried our 8th child, 11 months old. Stayed there three years. Had another son and in the Fall of 1818 moved to Tallageda Co. Last of Feb. A.D. 1847 moved to Caddo Parish, La. Then last of Jan. 1848, moved to Rusk Co. on or near Main Rabbit Creek.

A note by the transcriber says: "Miller Lee was 81 when he wrote the letter and adds that there is more in the letter but no names or dates."

GEORGE WASHINGTON LEE LETTER (grandson of Richard Henry Lee, II)

The letter appeared in the Oct.-Dec. 1996 issue of the Virginia Genealogist Magazine. The original is owned by Isabell Cameron of Berry Creek, California .

Letter written to Abner Gresham Lee by his father, George Washington Lee: October 9th, 1867 Feather River, Sutter County, Cal.

A.G. Lee. I will now write you a few lines to let you know that I am still alive and in tolerble health and dohope this may find you alive and in good health. I have your letter of last March the 7th, 67, before me which is the last leter I have had from you, and the last one that I have seen or heard of from you was theleter you wrote to E. W. after you had heard that Rachel was dead, and as you speak of Scalp takin it maybee that your Scalp has left the head; but I hope not. Well your leter that youbefore the one on the 7th ofMarch got lost so I could not find it and, I waited to see if I would find it but have not found it yet. In it you wanted to know something about your mother which I have entirely forgoten but E. W. says that you wantedto know how old she was when she died. Well she was Borne May 12th 1802 and died June 4th, 1852. You wanted to know if your uncle Levi had any son named Alfred. Now I can say to you that he has not. He has ason named Andrew but I have forgot his middle name though it appears to me it was Lawrence or Baley. I had a Cozen in Tennesse named Alfred but whether he had any middle name or not I don't know and he married one of my Cozens daughters on my mother's side by the name of Gailbreath and there was one of his brothers by the name of Abraham Lee and I think his wife was a Piron. Alfred and Abraham was sons of uncle Jehew Lee by Richard Henry Lee's second wife whose maiden name was Miller. Alfred and Abram are onley 1/2 cozens to me. They were Brothers to Isaac Lee of Mud Praire, Ill.and uncles to Peter T. Lee also of Mud Prairie, Ill. Now if aney one of them had a son cauled Alfred I don't know it. Well there must bee maney thousands of us as my grate grandfather was certainly the firstLee that ever was in North America with his familey. He was one of the setlers of Jamestown, Va. I haveforgotten great-grandmother's maiden name. She was Welch and born and raised in the City of Wales. The(y) had 4 sons and how maney daughters I do not now remember but I remember seeing of two.Old Aunt Rhodey Watkins and Aunt Judey. The 4 sons was named John, Peter, Evens and Richard Henrey who is my Grandfather. Well Richard Henry Lee married Mary Grisham who was the sister of thetwo John Grishams Brothers, full Welch also, and he had by her 7 sons and 3 daughters (to wit) Grisham,William, Jesse, Archer, Young, George and Abner. These was the sons. The daughters was named Dorothy, commonaly cauled Dolley, Mary & Elizabeth. Well I never saw uncle Grisham nor none of his family. He married Priciley Staples and staid in Virginia and was a gunsmith to the U. S. in time of the Revolution. Was then quite an old man and had children as old as my father so his family must have spredto many hundreds by this time. Uncle William also maried a Staples and mooved to Kentucky in an earlyday. Him and his family I have saw excep one son and two daughters. He had 5 sons and 4 or 5 daughters. Uncle Jessee maried but I have forgoten his wife's name. he went to Geogia, Oglethorp County, had a large family but I never saw him or aney of his children. Uncle Archer died in the Arme of the Revolution. Uncle Young maried a Mathewes and had children how maney I do not Know. I never sawhim. he staid in Virginia. I saw one of his sons, Guy Lee. Uncle George maried and moved to Kentucky . Who he married I do not know. I never saw him or any of his children. They lived on the National Road between Vandalia and the Urebar River in Ill. Your grandfather you know all about. Now Aunt Dolley married a Thorton. The(y) lived in tennesse though I never aney of them. Aunt Mary maried her cousin Thomas Lee son of G.uncle Peter Lee and had many children. I never saw aney but her grandson William Lee, Willis Reeves brother-in-law which you have saw. Aunt Elizabeth maried her cousin, also son of G.U. Peter, Richard Henrey Lee. the(y) both moved to Kentucky in an earley day andthen to Mo. She was Elizabeth Holley's grandmother & Dr. Wright's Grand mother. She was the youngest;and grandmother died and grandfather maried a Mary Miller and had by her 5 sons and 1 daughter (to wit)Richard, Barnet, Miller, Gehew & Stepen. Uncle Richard maried a Mary Devenport, had 5 or 6 boys and as maney girls. I have saw them amaney a time. Uncle Barnet maried Mary Dewroset & had one son and5 or6 daughters. I have saw them all often. Uncle Miller I have saw but it was when I was little. Who he maried I do not know. It likely that Stephen D. Lee of the confederate armey was one of his sons as he move to Alabama in an early day. I hope the President will have enough in Congress to sustain his vetos this winter. Well you will get a letter I wrote to Robert Cheshire. I had no envelop and sent it to town by George & Cam. George knew who it was to, put it in envelop, gave to Cam to Direct and he Directed it to you instead of to R. C.
