About Richard Swepson, Sr.

A Patriot of the American Revolution for VIRGINIA. DAR Ancestor # A111945

Father also seen as Henry Sampson/Swepson

Richard Swepson was born in 1712 in Gloucester County, Colony of Virginia. He was the son of Thomas (Swepston) Swepson Jr (1685-abt.1730) and his 1st wife, Maria M (Wright) Swepson (1683-1757). He was raised in Gloucester County, Virginia.

Richard had 2 marriages as his first wife died in 1777 in Mecklenburg County, Virginia. First he married Jane (1726-1777) on 14 June 1740 in King and Queen County (formerly Gloucester Co.), Virginia.

Richard Swenson's 1st wife was Jane/Jeanne Dandridge [SIC: perhaps Jeffries]. They removed to Lunenburg County into what is now Mecklenburg County in 1760. It is believed that Richard Swepson, accompanied by John Jeffries bought adjoining land in Mecklenburg on the same day. It is believed that the two men were brothers-in-law and that both were in the employ of Colonel Lew Burrell of "Kingsmill" Williamsburg VA, when they came into Mecklenburg, then Lunenburg. Richard Swepson married first Jane and fathered with her:

  1. Elizabeth Whitehead (1st husband) Clay (Swepson) born in 1747,
  2. Anne Dandridge Boyd (Swepson) born in 1750,
  3. Sarah Sims (Swepson) born in 1752,

  5. John Swepson born in 1759,
  6. Jeanne Dandridge Young (Swepson) born in 1762,
  7. Thomas Swepson born in 1765, and
  8. Susannah Davis (Swepson) born in 1767.

Richard Swepson married his second wife, Mrs. Mary Mallory Tabb of Elizabeth City County on April 12, 1779 with whom he fathered

  1. Lucy Speed (Swepson) born in 1780,
  2. Charity Swepson born in 1781, and
  3. William Mallory Swepson born in 1783.

Came to what is now Mecklenburg county, VA after purchasing 531 ac of land from Samuel & Elizabeth Phelps in 1760. There he would spend the rest of his life as planter and proprietor of the licensed (1761) 'ordinary' that was transferred (1794) by his estate to his son-in-law Alexander Boyd, and thereafter known as Boyd's Tavern. What is now known as the Alexander Boyd Cemetery was part of the same parcel of land. Richard Swepson's first wife (Jane, d. bef 1779) is believed to have been the earliest burial at the site.

Richard Swepson, Sr., was married twice. The only primary source information known to the authors of this page about the name of his wife before 1779 may be found in deed records and court orders. Extant court orders and deeds from Lunenburg & Mecklenburg counties between 1757 and 1774 show the given name of his wife as Jane. The maiden name of Mrs. Jane Swepson has been the subject of considerable speculation, and is often given as Dandridge or Jeffries. No documentation for either is known to US, but due to the names of the descendants, it is more likely her maiden name was Jeffries.
