14 June 1698, St. Peter's Vestry Meeting. Mr. Henry Wyatt, producing an order of the court for help to clear the roads in his precinct is ordered these following tithables, viz: Will Mackgeehe, Edward Tony, Richard Scruggs, James Neenes (Neeves), Thomas Ashcraft, Edward Finch, Thomas Wilkinson, John Rayle, Evan Dollard, Thomas Martin, Thomas Gibson, Will Gardner, Christopher Baker, William Johnson, Peter Massie, Robert Hughes,Thomas Howard, George Bradley, Henry Turner, and Thomas Mims. Signed by Register W. Clopton, Clerk of the Vestry.

9 July 1724. Robert Allen, a patent for 400 acres in Hanover County on the north side of Chickahominy Swamp, beginning at Capt. Thompson's. 40 shillings. (Nugent, Vol. III, page 266.)

9 April 1733. Sanborn Woodson of St. James Parish, Goochland County, Virginia, deeds to Robert Allen of St. Paul's Parish, Hanover County, Virginia, for 15 pounds, 120 acres in St. James Parish on the north side of James River called Head of Indian Grave, adj. John Woodson, Robert Woodson, Samuel Allen, M John Sutton and R. Harris. Witnesses: Robert Mosby, Randolph Bobbitt, Joseph Allen. (Goochland County Deed Book 1, page 399).

1 February 1733/34. Francis Clark of St. Margaret's Parish discharges the debt paid by Robert Allen of St. Paul's Parish. A deed is made over to Robert Allen...for 193 acres...east side of Stony Run...east fork...on the mouth of a grassey branch, along the line of William Snead. Witnesses: William Nichols and Joseph Allen. (Small book of Hanover County Records, page 5.)

4 June 1735. Indenture between John Mackeney of Goochland County and Samuel Meredith of St. Paul's Parish...a parcel of land in St.Paul's...60 acres on said Meredith's line, formerly Robert Allen's...near Beaverdam Swamp, along Zacharia Brook's line. Witnesses: John Bowie,Thomas Prosser, and Dannett Abney. Lease acknowledged and admitted torecord on 5 June 1735.

24 September 1735. I Robert Allen, of St. Paul's Parish...for the love and affection I bear unto my son, Robert Allen, of St. Paul's Parish, do give...125 acres being part of a patent in St. Paul's Parish...on the north side of Chickahominy Swamp, to the mouth of Wild Horse Branch.Witnesses: Benjamin Hawkins, Henry Perrin, and Harden Burnley. Deed acknowledged and admitted to record 2 October 1735.

17 August 1750. John Kidd of Goochland County to Robert Allen of the same county, for 15 pounds, 50 acres on the west side of Lickinghole Creek, adj. John Sandling and Michael Holland, dec'd. (Goochland County Deed Book 6, page 88.)

In 1754 Robert Allen purchased a trace of 346 acres from the estate of Michael Holland in Henrico County and deeded 100 acres of thye land to his son, Richard Allen, that same year. The following year in 1755 Robert Allen gave a deed to "my son, Joseph Allen" for 200 acres. The deed specifically stated that both Robert Allen and Joseph Allen were living on the 200 acres he was deeding to his son and Mr. Allen retained the use of his home and plantation for his natural life.

1 April 1754. Pouncey Anderson and Henry Martin executors of Michael Holland, dec'd, deed to Robert Allen for 35 pounds 12 shillings, 346 acres in Henrico County around the head of Northern Branch, which tract was patented by the said Michael Holland and by his will left to be sold by his executors. (Valentine, page 25)

5 October 1754. Robert Allen of the Parish and County of Henrico deed to Richard Allen of the aforesaid parish and county, the son of said Robert Allen, for 60 pounds, 100 acres in Henrico County and a negro man named Will Allen after the said Robert Allen's death, the said 100 acres being on the Northern Branch of the brook beginning at John Royal's corner...and is part of a tract of 346 acres granted by patent to Michael Holland and by the said Holland's executors sold Robert Allen. Witnesses: Wm. Streets, John Moseby, Rowland Blackburn. (Deeds, Wills, etc. 1750-67, Henrico County, Virginia, page 362).

3 March 1755, Robert Allen of Henrico County deed to Joseph Allen, his son for 50 pounds, 200 acres in Henrico County, being part of the land which the said Robert Allen bought of Michael Holland's executors, adjoining the lands of John Mosby, John Ford, and Richard Allen; and a negro woman named Philo. The said Robert Allen shall have the use of the plantation whereon he now lives and also the use of the negro woman Philo during his natural life. Acknowledged in Henrico County Court on 7 April 1755. (Henrico County, Book of Deeds, Wills, Etc. 1750-67, page 407.)

Robert Allen, Sr., apparently felt there was no need to make a will as he had deeded all his property to his sons. He made no provisions for the payment of his debts, and the court minutes have records of many lawsuits for debt, first against the widow and later against the sons of Robert Allen. One old friend, Hardin Burnley, who had witnessed the deed from Robert Allen, Sr., to his son, Robert Allen, Jr., in 1735, filed a lawsuit "for debt" against Robert Allen shortly before Robert's death. The suit was dismissed because of Robert Allen's death, and Mr. Burnley filed the suit against Sarah Allen soon after she bacame administrator of Robert Allen's estate. In April of 1756 Lydall Bacon filed a suit for debt against Sarah Allen, and shortly after that, suits were filed against Richard, Benjamin, and Joseph Allen and also against Samuel Allen, Sr. The following records were found in the Henrico County Court Minutes Book 1755-62:

5 July 1756. Harding Burnley vs. Robert Allen, in debt. John Mosby comes into court as security for def. Case continued. (p. 40).

4 October 1756. Sarah Allen obtains certificate for administration of Robert Allen, dec'd. She gives bond, Isaac Winston her seciruty, for 500pounds. (p. 42).

8 February 1757. Hardin Burnley vs. Robert Allen. in debt....abates by def.'s death. (p. 90).

8 February 1757. Hardin Burnley, Pl. vs. Sarah Allen, administrator for Robert Allen, dec'd....in debt. Def. failing to appear, court orders that unless def. appear at next court, pl. shall have damages and cost. (p. 98)

10 September 1757. Hardin Burnley Pl. vs. Sarah Allen, adm. for Robert Allen dec'd....in debt. The def. failing to appear, court confirms conditional judgement for pl. 47 pounds, 18s. and costs or 1/2 with interest from September 10, 1755. (p. 142).

4 April 1757. Lydal Bacon vs. Sarah Allen, admrx. of Robert Allen...in debt. The deft. not appearing, the court confirms the conditional judgement for the plaintiff for 50 pounds and costs or 1/2 with interest from November 24, 1755. (p. 142).

2 May 1758. Robert Allen, decd's estate is appriased and said appraisement and inventory is recorded. John Williamson, Cited. Bacon, and Thos. Wilkinson or any two of them are appointed to examine same and report to the court. (p. 244).

5 June 1758. An account of the estate of Robert Allen decd. with the examiner's report is received and recorded. (p. 259)

The appraisal and the inventory of the estate of Robert Allen have not been found, though the court minutes stated they have been made and recorded. No estate settlement records have been found so his only known children are those who have been proven by deeds or whose births were recorded in the St. Peter's Parish Register.

Robert Allen, Sr., had six known sons. In 1743, four of those sons were land holders in St. Paul's Parish, Hanover County, Virginia.
