Notes
Called to give evidence against John Ellis in 1644 when he was charged with fornication. Ellis was found guilty and sentenced to the whipping post, despite the fact that he and his wife were by then married. (NEHGR 119:163)
William Newland married Rose Holloway on May 19, 1648. On April 16, 1649, Mary Newland was born to William and Rose, which would mean that Mary was conceived around the time of William and Rose's marriage day, considering a normal gestation period (n.b. a first child is often born later than the ninth month, even sometimes bordering on the tenth). We know from the records that Newland also had another daughter, but there is no mention of a name or birthdate in the records.
The following is taken from The Allen Family Home Page by JackMacDonald:
"Rose Allen, the eldest daughter of George Allen and his first wife, was born in about 1609/10 in England. Rose was apparently married twice during her life. She married first to a man named Joseph Holway (also
written Holloway). Joseph, who was a millwright by trade, is thought to have been born in about 1605 in England."
"Sometime after arriving in the Massachusetts Bay Colony, Joseph and Rose settled for a short period at Dorchester (now within Suffolk County, Massachusetts). In about 1637, however, they moved to the newly established settlement of Sandwich in the New Plymouth Colony of Massachusetts (now within Barnstable County, Massachusetts), where they appear to have resided for the remainder of their lives.
While residing at Sandwich, Rose became very active in the Quaker movement and was often persecuted for her beliefs. Joseph Holway died at Sandwich in 1647."

Birth
Rose Allen was born in England, before 1621. Her origins are unknown, but it is possible she was from the Somerset area.[1]A noted Allen researcher places her birth year as 1610, although Anderson places it closer to 1621.
Quoting from Jack MacDonald:[2]
Rose Allen, the eldest daughter of George Allen and his first wife, was born in about 1609/1610 in England. Rose was apparently married twice during her life. She married first to a man named Joseph Holloway (also written Holway). Joseph, who was a millwright by trade, is thought to have been born in about 1605 in England.
Sometime after their marriage, Joseph and Rose appear to have settled for a short period of time at Dorchester in the Massachusetts Bay Colony (now within Suffolk County, Massachusetts). Joseph Holloway died at Sandwich in 1647.
After Joseph passed away, Rose married in the New Plymouth Colony for a second time to a man named William Newland on 16 May 1648. This was also William's second marriage, having previously been married to a woman named Elizabeth Smith. Rose is believed to have died at Sandwich sometime during the period 1690-1695 in what had then been formed into Barnstable County, Massachusetts.
Marriages
She married, as her first husband, Joseph Holloway about 1638/39.[1][3][4]
She married, as her second husband, William Newland, 19 May 1648.[5]
Research Notes
Death Sandwich, Barnstable, Massachusetts Death 1690 OR 1694, Sandwich, Barnstable, Mass[6] Questions regarding birth date postulated in Great Migration
Anderson's estimate of Rose's birth year raises some questions: Inconsistent with other secondary sources which estimate closer to 1609/10.[7]
Assuming 1621, Rose would have been around 14 years old at the time her father, step-mother, and brothers came to the new world, yet she did not come with them. 1621 also puts her birth very close to the time her mother passed away (plausible, but does raise questions).
No known marriage record in the Colony, suggesting they were married in England before immigrating. Marriage date also at odds with the idea that she and Joseph Holloway were living (together?) in Dorchester in 1636.
First child at 17 - before Anderson's 'by about 1639' estimate if son Joseph's birth year (1638) is correct. Puts her married and immigrating around the age of 15, and marrying a man 14 years her senior. Marries second to another man also 14-16 years her senior.
Taken together, this timeline seems questionable.
