His mother apparently died the year after his birth. The name changes from Wedeles to Wels were an attempt to remove traces of Jewish heritage. Common practice at the time.

"Engineer Rudolf Wels was born in 1882. During the war he was deported with Transport Dm from Theresienstadt,Ghetto,Czechoslovakia to Auschwitz Birkenau,Extermination Camp,Poland on 06/09/1943.
Engineer Wels was murdered in the Shoah (according to this source).
