- A Serious Accident.
- While grinding corn for feed at J W Smith's last Saturday Russel Smith lost two fingers. Some cornhusks became lodged in the mill, and he reached to pull them out; stumbling, he put his hand too far between the grinders, and in an instant the first and second fingers of the left had were torn off. The team stopped at his command, or the whole hand might have been crushed. Two of the tendons were wrenched out of the arm, which may stiffen the hand to some extent. Dr.s Ewing and Bennett were summoned, and attended to the wounds as well as medical skill could do, but it will be several weeks before Mr. Smith will be able to use his hand. ______________________

- He was married in Illinois September 1876, and with his wife came to Kansas 38 years ago. - Russell was named after a brother of Lucy Ann. The brother died young at the age of 22 years. Russell was a farmer. While in the Wellsvill area, he also did some work with the "railroad gang". They worked as Sante Fe Railroad Section Hands. The men maintained the rails running through Wellsville.
- In 1903 Russell and Emma moved to their own farm in Richland Township. There they lived until Russell became of ill health. The couple then moved in with their youngest son, Ellis C. Smith. Both passed away at Ellis' home in Stanton Township, Miami Co., Ks. _________________________
