Family legend states that Ruth Elkins Skaggs was captured from her home in Virginia around 1760 by Cherokee Indians, She was then taken to North Carolina and became pregnant with Rachel/Rebecca. Ruth's was given the nickname "Old Cherry" by the Cherokee. Eventually, she escaped her captors, came back to Virginia and gave Rebecca/Rachel the last name of Skaggs. Her husband John Skaggs either divorced her or would no longer have her as his wife; he assumed her to have bee killed because she had been missing four years. She then met and married Johann Bischoff (John Bishop).

Ruth Scaggs and Rachel Scaggs were kidnapped by Indians in Virginia during Lord Dunmore's War in 1774 and they were rescued from captivity during the Virginia Militia attack on the Cherokees at Chickamauga in 1779 and brought back to Virginia. This is consistent with Bishop family legend that Ruth was captive for about four years and came back to Virginia with kids.
