About Zachariah Skaggs

Zachariah Skaggs was Not the Father of Old Peter

Results are back from a Y-DNA test for a descendant of Zachariah Skaggs. The Zachariah descendant had a different Y-DNA haplogroup than both Old Peter and Old Solomon Skaggs, meaning Zachariah couldn't have been either the father or brother of Old Peter Skaggs or his brother Old Solomon. They were likely related, but not from the same immediate family.

The Skaggs Y-DNA project tested the descendants of Old Peter Skaggs and his reputed brother, Old Solomon Skaggs. The descendants of both these men had the Y-haplogroup R-BY99605. Since Old Peter and Old Solomon were brothers, their father had to have the same R-BY99605 haplogroup in order to give it to both Peter and Solomon.

Zachariah Skaggs' descendant tested as R-FT6584. A man who was R-FT6584 could NOT have been the biological father of two sons who were R-BY99605. Couldn't happen.

This conclusively proves that Zachariah was NOT the biological father of Old Peter Skaggs
It also proves that Zachariah was NOT a brother of Old Peter
So if your Skaggs family tree has Zachariah as father or brother of Old Peter Skaggs you should change it so that Old Peter's father is "unknown."

Martha Whitt's bible states that Zachariah was married to a Nancy, also called Annie. Also their son Jeremiah was born on October 25, 1766. A John Skaggs and a Charles Skaggs also showed up on this tithables list with Zachariah. To be tithable as an independent head of household these guys had to be at least 21 years old. Zachariah was enlisted in General Andrew Lewis' army for Lord Dunmore's War against the Indians in 1774. Dunmore's War culminated with the Battle of Point Pleasant on October 10, 1774.
