Sadie Berwin

Recorded in the 1930 Federal Census living with her husband Max, and daughter Julia and son Nathan. She was using the name Mary at that time and she was unemployed. Nathan was a clerk in a printing shop while Julia was a stenographer in a wholesale grocery. They lived at 1474 East Warne Avenue in the city of St. Louis.

First daughter Julia Berwin was probably named after Sadie Marx Berwin's mother Julia Marx who died in 1900.

First son Nathan Berwin was probably named after Sadie Marx Berwin's father Nachema Marx who had died in 1884.

Her death certificate stated she was a married, white, female with her husband named Max Berwin. She was 52 years old. She was described as doing housework. She was born in St. Louis to unnamed parents, her father was born in Germany as was her mother. She had been treated for colon cancer for three years, and the diagnosis was made by an operation by her physician Dr. Bernard T. Koen whose address was 5300 Arsenal Street in St. Louis. She was buried in Mt. Olive Hebrew Cemetery by undertaker H. B. Berger at 4715 McPherson Street.

She was married to Max Berwin, son of a wounded Union soldier, in St. Louis on January 31, 1905.

In 1880 she lived with her family at 2207 Carr Street. Her father died of cholera in 1884.

In 1906 she lived at 1718 South 8th Street. Daughter Julia was born in January of 1906.

In 1911 she lived at 2118 Biddle in Ward 4. Son Nathan was born in January of 1911.

In 1930 she lived at 1474 East Warne, in Ward 9. This house became the home of several more generations of the Berwin family down to the 1950's and early 1960's. The entire family of Nathan Berwin and Ellen Clarke was raised in the residence.
