About Saint René Goupil, S.J.
Overview
Rene Goupil was a surgeon, brother, Jesuit, missionary and martyr. He was a surgeon in Orléans, France, before entering the novitiate of Jesuits in 1639. He had to leave the novitiate due to deafness. Goupil volunteered to serve as a lay missionary to assist the Jesuit Fathers and in 1640 he arrived in New France. In 1642 Goupil travelled to the Huron missions with Father Isaac Jogues, along with about 40 others. They were captured by the Iroquois and tortured. Goupil was killed on 29 September 1642 by several blows to the head by a tomahawk wielded by an enraged Iroquois who had witnessed Goupil give the sign of the cross over the head of a child. He was canonized on 29 June 1930 in Rome by Pope Pius XI. He is patron saint of anesthetists.

They were all canonized as saints in the Roman Catholic Church in 1930.
