About Samuel Carle, III

Samuel Carle III, son of Samuel Jr. and Esther, was born in Scarborough in 1749, and baptized there on 8 May 1750. He m. Elizabeth Berry on 6 Aug 1767, and their infant child (Eunice, twin sister to dau Elizabeth) was buried in Scarborough on 29 Jan 1770.

"Samuel Carll" is listed as a private in Capt Silas Burbank's Company, Rev War, serving from 1 Sept 1777 through 1 Dec 1777. His enlistment was for three years, but a margin note indicates that he was "sick at Albany". Also serving with him was one "Ebenezer Carll", either his younger brother Ebenezer (b. c1754) or his first cousin Ebenezer (1757-1851) [son of Robert Carle].

In 1790, "Saml Carl" was residing in Scarborough with his wife, three sons (all under the age of 16), and three daughters. Two older children, Benjamin (b. 1768) and Elizabeth (1770-1800) [wife of Jonathan Pillsbury] were already married by 1790. Of the remaining six children, only three can be identified -- Mehitable (1775-1855) [wife of David Pettingill of Portland], Dorcas (b. c1780), and John (b. c1783) [a resident of Portland, 1810-1830].

Next door to him in 1790 was his brother Ebenezer (b. c1754). Two households away from them was their first cousin, Ebenezer Carle (1757-1751).

Samuel Carle was deceased by 1800. It is likely that he died in either Portland or in Scarborough.
