About Samuel Moxley, Sr

Born in either Fairfax or Loudoun County, VA. Son of unknown Moxley and Delilah (maiden name may have been McIntyre, although unproven). Brother of William Moxley (1798-1831)(Mary Erb), Elizabeth Moxley (1804-1883)(John Kinsey), Mary Moxley (1806-1892)(Jeptha G. DeKay), Sarah Ann Moxley (1808-1889)(William Benton) - all buried in Kitchener, Ontario, Canada, and Orlando Henry Moxley (1815- 1887)(Mrs. Sarah Evans and Mrs. Elizabeth Moyer Simons) who is buried in Guelph, Ontario. Also half-brother, Benjamin B. Eby (1819- 1898) who died in Louisville, KY.

The family left VA about 1816 on their way to Kentucky via Pennsylvania. The husband/father died in the area of McClellandtown in Fayette County, PA. At about the same time a Daniel Eby (1773-June 1820), a widower with two daughters, originally from Lancaster, PA who had moved to Waterloo County, Ontario, Canada in 1807, had journeyed to Fayette County in Oct. 1817 to visit relatives. While there he met Delilah Moxley and they were married in Jan. 1818 in McClellandtown. Delilah (Apr. 1779-June 25, 1842) remained in Waterloo County, Ontario and was buried there near son William and daughter Sarah Ann Benton. Daniel Eby died in PA on a return trip there in 1820. It is believed that Delilah acted as some sort of medical assistant or mid-wife, in Waterloo County (town of Berlin, now Kitchener).

Samuel Moxley farmed in Waterloo County. On Apr.2, 1833, in Waterloo Cty., he married Laura Kilborn (Mar. 19, 1812-Nov. 26, 1838), native of Leeds County, Ontario, d/o of Whiting Kilborn (1791-1871) and Mary Wood (1789-1870). Laura was first buried in the Limerick Cornell Cemetery but the cemetery remains were moved in 1966 to Doon Pioneer Village cemetery with the building of highway 401.

Samuel and Laura had two children: (1) Mary Jane (b. Nov. 12, 1835) for whom nothing further is known; and (2) Washington Moxley (Dec. 1, 1837-Dec. 7, 1911) who married Alice Maria Kitchen (Apr. 4, 1845-Mar. 4, 1910) in Brant County, Ontario and soon after settled on a farm in Shelby County, MO. They had four children there. In 1901 the family moved to Merced, CA and operated a peach farm on the outskirts of town. Members of ths family are buried in the Merced I.O.O.F. District Cemetery.

On Oct. 24, 1839 in Berlin, Ontario, Samuel was married to Elizabeth Springer (June 15, 1821-Feb. 12, 1895), daughter of Benjamin Springer (1773-1834) and Mary Ryckman (ca1777-1834) of Waterloo County, the ceremony performed by Rev. H. Montgomery, a Methodist minister.

In 1842, Samuel sold one acre of his land in the town of Berlin (now Kitchener) for one dollar to the Trustees of the Wesleyan Methodist Church. This church continues to function as Trinity United Church. Six children were born to Samuel and Elizabeth in Waterloo County.

In Oct. 1853 Samuel sold his interests in Waterloo and moved to the area of Uniontown in Fayette County, PA, the same area where he had lived for a short time prior to moving north to Canada. He purchased 166 acres in Menallen Twp. from Elijah Jennings for $6800. While in this area five more children were born. In 1867 the family picked up roots again and moved from PA to Shelbina in Shelby County, MO. It is believed he experienced difficult financial times there. After Samuel's death, Elizabeth lived out her remaining years with her son, William S., in Salt River Twp. Children: (1) Jael Delilah Moxley (Sept. 15, 1840- Jan. 14, 1876) married on Nov. 26, 1868 in Shelbina to Dr. Demosthenes White (1834-1895). No known children. "Jane" was buried in the Moxley family plot in Shelbina.

(2) William Ryckman Moxley (Jan. 2, 1843- Mar. 27, 1844) died in Waterloo County, Ontario, Canada.

(3) Hannah Maria Moxley (Mar. 3, 1845- Mar. 20, 1922) married Caleb Johnson Miller (1841-1908) in Menallen Twp., Fayette Co., PA. They lived for a time in Shelby, MO but returned to PA about 1880. There were four Miller children. The parents are buried in Bridgeport Cemetery, Brownsville.

They had eight children. Their marriage was often in turmoil, so divorced in the mid-1890s. In 1903 Jennie married John D. Burns. S.J., as he was known, is buried in Indian Hill Cemetery, Chapman, KS with some of his children. Jennie and John are buried in Glasco Cemetery.
