Biography

Samuel Paine was born in Rehoboth, Massachusetts, on 12 July 1662 (recorded as "12. 5 mo 1662," wherein the 5th month means July).[1]

Samuel Paine was married to Anna Peck at Rehoboth, Massachusetts, on 16 December 1685.[2]

Samuel Paine bought 200 acres of land in what is now Pomfret and in 1696 bought land in South Woodstock. On May 15, 1708 he exchanged his Rehoboth farm for John Lyon's farm in Woodstock, a farm of 140 acres, and with his children moved to Woodstock. In 1709 he and Nathaniel Sanger were the committee to see the "Borderers regarding the Rev. Mr. Dwight's salary." In 1719 Samuel was one of a committee on the location of the new meeting-house. In 1715 and 1719 he was a member of the General Court at Boston. When he became helpless in old age, his son Daniel cared for him for six years until his death. His grandfather Paine, his brother Benjamin and his father-in-law Samuel Peck all remembered him in their wills. His second wife Abigail, when four years old, was captured by Indians with sixteen others and taken from Hatfield, Mass., to Canada. Eight months later the party was ransomed for L200.
