”There is a great deal of misinformation circulated about Sarah Ennis. She is often listed as Sarah Cropper in genealogies that have been passed down for generations. I have been unable to find any records listing a Sarah Cropper in Pennsylvania. However, the title of "cooper" is often listed after her husband's name which may account for some of the confusion. A cooper is a barrel maker.”
Biography
Sarah Ennis was born about 1726 at Upper Providence Township, Pennsylvania, and died on 26 February 1765 at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. She was the daughter of James Ennis and Sarah Peavey.
William West, cooper, and Sarah Ennis were married on 18 January 1753 at the Friends Meeting House in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He was the son of John West and Sarah Pearson.
The six (6) children of William West and Sarah Ennis were:
- John West. Born 7 Mar 1724 (7 11 month 1753 in Quaker records) at Providence Twp Chester Co PA. ?Married Hannah Ball.? (Listed at DAR.)
- James West. Born 26 October 1755 at Philadelphia, PA.
- William West. Born 1757 at Chester County, PA. Married Ann Brinton. (Listed at DAR.)
- Rebecca West. Born 27 January 1760 at Philadelphia, PA.
- Benjamin West. Born 13 January 1763 at Philadelphia, PA.
- unknown West. Born 26 February 1765 at Philadelphia, PA, died 28 February 1765.
After Sarah’s death, William West remarried on 11 June 1767 to Hannah Shaw. He died 06 December 1808 at Darby, Delaware County, Pennsylvania, United States.
