Biography

Sir Walter Hungerford of Farleigh is given as "half-brother" of Sir Edward Hungerford in the source. Whether is was this son of Walter, Lord Hungerford, or another, needs to be determined. With Walter's attainder, Farleigh again passed into the hands of the Crown - but it was sold back to Walter's son Edward, four years later. Gentleman pensioner to Queen Elizabeth, was twice married, but died without issue in 1607. Walter Hungerford left his property to him, with remainder to his heirs male by a mistress, Margery Bright. The half-brother succeeded to the Hungerford estates, and both Lady Hungerford and Margery Bright sued for dower. Margery also claimed maintenance for her youngest son and asserted that Edward Hungerford had received lands worth 3,000 pounds a year from his half-brother in his lifetime and had now taken over the remainder whose value she put variously at 20,000 or 80,000 pounds. Carrying on family tradition, Edward accused his second wife of trying to poison him. The case was dismissed by the courts, but Edward went to prison, rather than pay her costs. He left to his widow (d. 1653) a life interest in the estates, with remainder to his great-nephew, Sir Edward (1596-1648), son of Sir Anthony Hungerford of Black Bourton, Oxfordshire.
