About Sir James H. Jeans

Sir James Hopwood Jeans OM FRS MA DSc ScD LLD (11 September 1877 – 16 September 1946) was an English physicist, astronomer and mathematician.

Mathematician, astronomer and physicist, James was descended from a family of talented journalists. He published many scientific papers and wrote popular books that were translated into many different languages, notably "The Universe Around Us" , "The Mysterious Universe" and "Science and Music", the latter for his second wife Susi Hock with whom he shared an interest in music.

In 1905 he took up a post of Professor of Applied Mathematics at Princeton N.J. and it was here that he met Hiram Bingham and his first wife (Alfreda Mitchell) who arrived in Princeton at the same time. He became a regular visitor to the Bingham house and he met his wife to be (Charlie, sister of Alfreda) at a party there. They married in 1907 and a year later James moved back to England with his wife and baby daughter.

In 1919 he was made Honorary Secretary of the Royal Society and he was knighted in 1928.
