Sonora C. Prowse

Aged 24 years. Lived in Castro Valley, CA. Interred November 6, 1877. [Another researcher says she died 7 Nov 1877].

She was the 4th child (3rd daughter) of John Milton Spriggs and Sarah Adaline Carroll.

 John Milton Spriggs was born in South Carolina and went to Georgia as a young man, and there married Sarah Adaline Carroll on 11 Dec 1845 in Union Co., GA.  About 1850 he left Lumpkin County GA to seek the family fortune in Eldorado, California.  He encountered many hardships on the way but finally reached Georgetown, Eldorado Co. on 1 Sept 1850.  His gold mining venture was not very successful, so returned to his home & family in GA.

In 1852 he again crossed the plains. this time with his wife and surviving daughter, Florida America Spriggs, who was aged 4. They remained at Gold Hill, Placer County during that winter and then moved on to Knight's Landing, Yolo Co., CA .

 Sonora C. Spriggs was the first child born in California (19 Sep 1853), after their arrival.

On 3 Oct 1872 Sonora married Thomas J. Prowse. They had two sons, Charles T., b. 18 Sep 1873, and John G. (or B.), b. 23 Aug 1875. Both born in California. Sonora died on 6 Nov 1877, aged 24 days 1 mo 18 days.
After her death her husband, Thomas J. Prowse, went back to his home state of IL where he married Mary A. (Frentress) Adams on 21 Nov 1878 in Jo Daviess Co., IL. His 2nd wife owned property in Honey Creek township, Delaware Co., IA, and there they had 2 children, one dying in infancy. They made their home there and both died in Manchester, Delaware Co. IA.
