About Stephen Arnold

  • Stephen Arnold Find A Grave Memorial# 24291426 Stephen Arnold was baptised in Ilchester, England in Somerset. Bob and Claudia visited here in 2002 on their trip to England and stayed at the Northover Manor in Ilchester: www.northovermanor.com. Visited cemetery's in area, but gravestones too old and weathered to see names. Local church official was no help.

Stephen emigrated to Rhode Island with his parents William and Christian (Peak) Arnold in 1636 before it was a Colony. Married Sarah Smith of Rehoboth, MA on 11/24/1646. He was Deputy Governor of the Colony of R.I. various years between 1664-1690. Owned a large portion of property named the "Cowsett Purchase". Buried on homestead, but in 1830 that land was built upon and the grave stones were moved to Swan Point Cemetery in Providence. They are Group 184, Lots 2-A, near the Ellipse.

Historical Events: The Great Fire of London, a major conflagration that swept through the central parts of London from Sunday, 2 September to Wednesday, 5 September 1666, was one of the major events in the history of England. The fire gutted the medieval City of London inside the old Roman City Wall. It threatened, but did not reach, the aristocratic district of Westminster (the modern West End), Charles II's Palace of Whitehall, and most of the suburban slums. It consumed 13,200 houses, 87 parish churches, St. Paul's Cathedral, and most of the buildings of the City authorities. It is estimated that it destroyed the homes of 70,000 of the City's ca. 80,000 inhabitants. The death toll from the fire is unknown and is traditionally thought to have been small, as only a few verified deaths were recorded. This reasoning has recently been challenged on the grounds that the deaths of poor and middle-class people were not recorded anywhere, and that the heat of the fire may have cremated many victims, leaving no recognisable remains.
