About Stephen Hughes

Do not confuse him with Stephen Hughes (c1725-1793).

Biography

He WAS NOT born in Wales but in Virginia as his parents were also born in Virginia. His father was JOHN HUGHES (not Robert)

And his wife was Elizabeth Childers (not Tarleton and was called "my daughter Elizabeth wife of Stephen Hughes".(Henrico County, VA Misc. Records 1718-26, Vol 2, pg. 415-16)

Stephen Hughes operated a ferry that was located near the Henrico Courthouse at Varina, Virginia, and evidently crossed the James to the south side from there. According to Road Orders, he took over the operation from Widow Atkinson. According to Warren Atkinson, there is a woman's prison built there or adjacent to where the ferry was located. Michaux took over the ferry after Stephen Hughes gave it up. Sarah and Thomas Atkinson's land was on the north side of the James River, just west of Maidens. Michaux land was located just west of Manikintowne, situated between Hughes Creek and Manikintowne, in the area of Tomahawk Creek, or just east of same. (Warren Atkinson 3/30/2005)
