Patriot of the American Revolution for North Carolina DAR# A131610
Theobald (Dewalt, Devalt) Gross was a Revolutionary War veteran. He filed his war pension claim at a late age. His application listed multiple three month enlistments and service against the British and the Indians. Wounded at Battle of Hanging Rock, he was briefly hospitalized at Camden, South Carolina. His pension was approved.
Simon Gross, Theobald's father, assigned part of his property to Theobald on 6 February 1797. The property was located at Salem (Surry) Rowan County, North Carolina, north side of Deep Creek. Indenture recorded in Book G, Surry County, NC, 6 Feb 1797. Assigns northern half of 238 acres obtained from Frederick Shore (Schurr) to son, Theobald (Dewalt). Witnesses were Henry Speer, John Miller, and John Joiner.
There has been no agreement, as yet, about the mother relationship to Theobald Gross. My belief is the mother was Dorothea and she died giving birth to Theobald. Others believe that Simon Gross's second wife, Veronica Mayer, was Theobald's mother. Some family historians believe Theobald accompanied his half-sister, Sarah Gross, and her husband, Johann Frederick Lang to the Moravian settlement at NC.
