The date of 11 Jun 1763 given for his death is the date of his will. It wasn't probated until October 20 which means he probably didn't die until early October.

Biography

https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Rucker-134

Thomas Rucker was born in Essex, Colonial Virginia, a son of Peter Rucker and Elizabeth Fielding.

Other researchers believe that Thomas and his brother John Rucker were immigrates to American.[1]

Thomas and his mother were both mentioned in his father’s Will.[2] Brothers John and Thomas Rucker were heading ship loads of settlers to VA in the 1690's. John and Thomas each received 5,850 acres of land in 1699 when the normal grant was 50 acres with the option to buy 100 more. John was granted the title of Earl. He was co-founder of St. Mark's Parish.

On 27 May 1725, Thomas (of St. Anne Parish) bought 100 acres from James Taylor (of St. Stephen Parish, King and Queen County). He then sold this land to Henry Downs in 1727. According to Wood, Thomas was by this time living in King and Queen County, suggestion this is where the land was.[3] He patented 876 acres in Spotsylvania in 1730. He sold 476 acres of this to his brother John Rucker in 1732, and in 1737 Thomas and his wife "Elizabeth" along with James Rucker and Margaret, his wife, sold land to Charles Beasley.[4] This would prove that Thomas and Elizabeth were married prior to 1737. In 1739 he purchases 539 acres "on the North side of the Rapidan River, on Maple Run" from his brother John.

Thomas was appointed constable of Orange County on 28 May 1741.[5] That same year, he sold land to Robert Taliaferro. By 1747 he was living in St. Thomas Parish, Orange County, when he sold 123 acres to son William Rucker (this puts William's birth before 1726, as he would have had to be at least 21 years of age to own land). He then sold 90 acres to Thomas Coffee, "both of Orange [County]." In 1754 he patented 347 acres of "wash land." It would appear he then moved to Culpeper County, where he purchased 100 acres from Lewis Herndon and his wife. This land was on both sides of the Stanton River. On 16 Jul 1761, he is given as "of Culpeper" in a deed selling 240 acres to Michael Erhart.[6]

Thomas married Elizabeth Eliza Reynolds, born 1715, in Virginia. Elizabeth appears as "Sarah" in her father's Will [Cornelius' will read "to daughters Sarah, Annie, Margaret, Mary"; not sure how this is interpreted as "Elizabeth"] but as "Elizabeth Rucker" in her mother's will.[7] Marriage record for Elizabeth Reynolds and Thomas Rucker, Essex County VA married 1753.[8] Husband, Thomas Rucker was one of the executors for his mother-in-law.

If Thomas and Elizabeth Reynolds married in 1753, she CANNOT be the mother of his children. It is possible that the mother of Thomas's children may have been a "Mauldin," daughter (or sister) of Richard Mauldin who was a contemporary of Thomas Rucker, appearing in many land transactions in Orange County, between 1733 and 1745.

Thomas had 13 children (listed in the order they appear in their father's will, except for Cornelius who predeceased his father) NOTE: Wood gives no birth dates for any of Thomas's children.

  1. Cornelius Rucker, b. abt. 1730; d. bef. 1763; m. Mary White. [9]
  2. Thomas Rucker, Jr., d. bef. 23 Jun 1805, when his will was probated in Madison Co. VA;[10] m. Elizabeth (née unknown; some researchers say "Wisdom").
  3. Peter Rucker, b. bef. 1738, (Thomas deeded him 122 acres of land in Culpeper County on 15 Mar 1759) [11] m. Sarah (possibly Cowherd) and removed to Mississippi.
  4. Mary Rucker, d. aft. 1763
  5. John Rucker, b. abt. 1728; d. 1794; m. 1750, Mary Burton.[12]
  6. Elizabeth Rucker, d. aft. 1763
  7. Martha Rucker, d. aft. 1763
  8. William Rucker, b. bef. 1726 (Whitley gives DOB between 1720-1725) [13]; m. ___ Smith, dau. of Isaac and Margaret (Rucker) Smith.[14] Whitley states William married an "Elizabeth" in Culpeper County in 1744, and moved to Elbert County, Georgia where he died about 1834.[15]
  9. Mauldin Rucker, d. aft. 1763
  10. Isaac Rucker, d. aft. 1763
  11. Frances "Franky" Rucker; m. 1782, William Alexander [16]
  12. George Rucker, d. bef. 6 Nov 1815, when his will was probated; m. Catherine Ehart [17]
  13. Esther Rucker

Thomas was a slave owner as evidenced by his will which lists the following enslaved people lent to his wife, Elizabeth for the duration of her life following his death:

Negro Jack
Hannah Unknown (bef.1763-)

Thomas wrote his Will on 11 Jun 1763, in Culpepper County, Virginia (which was established in 1749).[18][19]

Notes

1731-1734 Spotsylvania County, Virginia Deed Book B; [William Armstrong Crozier];
Feby. 6, 1732. Thomas Rucker of Caroline Co. to John Rucker of Spts. Co. £20 ster., 476 a. St. Mark's Par., Spts. Co.—part of pat. granted sd. Thos. Rucker. Witnesses: Thos. Chew, Joseph Hawkins, Robert Turner. Feby. 6, 1732-3. Elizabeth, wife of Thomas Rucker, acknowledged her dower, etc.

Comments

Other researchers suggest Elizabeth's maiden name was Tinsley. Elizabeth Tinsley The marriage record for Thomas Rucker and Elizabeth Reynolds gives a date of 1753.[1] This would mean that Elizabeth Reynolds was not the mother of Thomas's children.
